Full Plot Details

Charlie is in boot camp in the "awkward squad." Once in France he gets no letters from home. He finally gets a package containing limburger cheese which requires a gas mask and which he throws over into the German trench. He goes "over the top" and captures thirteen Germans ("I surrounded them"), then volunteers to wander through the German lines disguised as a tree trunk. With the help of a French girl he captures the Kaiser and the Crown Prince and is given a statue and victory parade in New York and then ... fellow soldiers wake him from his dream.

User Review - 10/10 by Sarah KOne of the few movies made about World War I, this is a comic gem among the short films of that era. Made as a moral booster for the fighting soldiers in 1918, it came late in the war, but many soldiers praised its realistic portrayal of the battlefield and integration of humor in a war situation. One of my favorite of Chaplin's shorts and worth a few dozen laughs at least.

The romance is great, the potrayal of life in the trenches was great and of course, it was side-splittingly hilarious. Pity he wakes up and it's all a dream, really!

Not only does it give a realistic experience of being in the trenches but it makes you laugh at the idiocy of the situation. "How did you capture 13 German soldiers by yourself?" the tramp is asked- "I surrounded them" he explains- how can anyone not find that funny?
