New York TimesMike HaleWhat keeps this 54-minute film consistently engaging is Sandy herself, wary, pragmatic and... an absolute natural in front of the camera.
Movie NationRoger MooreWhite guys with "yellow fever," looking for an Asian mate. Not as creepy as you might expect.
PopMattersCynthia FuchsIt's something of a roller coaster ride by film's end.
User ReviewAndy CAt first it all seemed ridiculous but by the end of the whole movie I actually felt quite complicated.

User ReviewYon CSXSW 2012 World Premiere: â??Seeking Asian Femaleâ?? Directed by San Francisco-based filmmaker Debbie Lum, â??Seeking Asian Femaleâ?? follows the unlikely romance between Steven â?? a white, American man obsessed with Asian women â?? and Sandy, the young Chinese woman he meets online. Still single at age 30, Sandy (whose real name is Zhang Jianhua) was an â??old maidâ?? by Chinese standards and turned to online dating in hopes of meeting an open-minded Chinese man. Instead she found Steven, an American in his early â??60s with a severe case of â??yellow fever.â?? The documentary is told through the viewpoint of Lum who, as a Chinese American woman, was fascinated with Western menâ??s obsession with Asian women. It took over five years to make the film, as Lum followed her main character until he found a Chinese who wanted to marry him. Lum documents and narrates Steven and Sandyâ??s unstable, precarious relationship with skepticism as the couple attempts to build a marriage from scratch. Lum becomes their translator and marriage counselor, as the two have to use Google Translate to regularly communicate. Lumâ??s role in the project had changed dramatically. She began as a filmmaker with the goal of documenting a manâ??s obsession, but quickly found herself in the middle of an awkward, often humorous entanglement between two people who could barely understand each other. â??Seeking Asian Femaleâ?? was one of my favorite films at this yearâ??s South by Southwest Film Festival. Itâ??s a fantastic, intimate look at how difficult and unpredictable romance and relationships can be. Even though the film focuses on Stevenâ??s obsession with Asian women, the rough patches are no doubt familiar. They have trouble communicating â?? theyâ??re separated by great distances â?? they struggle with living together â?? â??Seeking Asian Femaleâ?? is ultimately a documentary that captures what itâ??s like to be in love â?? to be in a relationship â?? and if two people can overcome their differences to make things work. â??Seeking Asian Femaleâ?? is an intriguing, affecting work of documentary filmmaking. It engages the viewer and brings them into the living room of a couple who struggle to find their roles in a relationship forged from the fires obsession and desperation. I loved this film!

User ReviewGareth DI watching Seeking Asian Female and the first thing that struck me was the biased attitude and instrusiveness of the documentarian, Debbie Lum. It seems to me not only slightly apparent but blantantly obvious that Sandy was herself a "selfish pig" intent on one thing and one thing only; her objective to find and older American male and use him for her purposes of moving to the United States where she would have much opportunity. Sandy her transparency, did what "she had to do" to get what she wanted even if it meant marrying and having sex with an lonely older not-so-well-off sloppy pudgy American man. If because of her single-minded goal of residing in American, she found herself "in love" with the slob, that was his luck.
