Later, Owen and Val find comfort in their mutual friendship, and when he proposes to her in a spirit of levity, she accepts and they elope just as Don, realizing he still loves Val, breaks off with Madge. Uncertain of her love for Owen, Val takes in the disillusioned and intoxicated Don while her husband is away on business, and when he challenges Owen, the husband realizes that his wife has remained faithful and loves him rather than Don.
