Goatdog's MoviesMichael W. Phillips, Jr.The supporting cast is remarkable, especially Red Buttons.
EmanuelLevy.ComEmanuel LevyLogan's message picture about interracial marriage is made more enjoyable by the then novelty of locations shooting in Japan as well as likable performances from Marlon Brando, Red Buttons, and rest of the cast.
User ReviewChase MI can't believe that this film was even made at the time it was made. I mean, of course, at the time there was a rising civil rights movement in the United States taking place and Americans were beginning to examine their own prejudices, and though this story looks at the prejudices and post-war feeling s people in the military were having towards the Japanese and soldiers falling in love with Japanese women and men was a reality, that is what makes this film amazing. The supporting cast is very strong, especially Red Buttons and Miyoshi Umeki, who both won respective Supporting Actor and Actress Oscar statues for their work in this movie( making Umeki the first Asian American actress to win an Oscar). But, they aren't the only ones making an impact, James Garner and Miiko Taka also make considerable impact as Brando's buddy and Brando's love interest. Great movie.
User ReviewMary MDid anyone else notice that the part in Brando's hair is perfect?
User ReviewSlappy MSuch a beautiful movie! The scenery, the story,Marlon Brando, all of it was beautiful! It's a little long but well worth it. It's such a heart-wrenching and at the same time heartwarming story. It's definitely a must watch. I'm sure at the time this came out it was still a very controversial issue. I'm not sure why Ricardo Montalban was cast as a Japanese man, but he did make a sexy one! It was a great, sweet, beautiful movie!
User ReviewDan RHana-ogi: The pleasure does not lie in the end itself. It's in the pleasurable steps to that end. *My favourite Brando movie.
User ReviewNik BIt was an excellent film which explores two very different cultures.
User ReviewChristine RBeautiful film with messages about race and marriage that seem well before their time. Amazing performances by Marlon Brando, Red Buttons, Miyoshi Umeki, and Miiko Taka. Japan itself is also a stunning star as many beautiful sites and interesting rituals are shown. Overall a fantastic movie very worth a watch.
User ReviewLes EFive stars simply for the variety of Japanese theater genres shown, from matsubayashi to bunraku puppetry, this is like a perfect sampling of Japanese theater. The story itself is sad and moving (even though a bit dated, but can interracial disharmony and bigotry ever be dated?) and the acting is superb all around. Marlon Brando's mutterings at the beginning of the film clear up right after you tune into his line, "She has enormous... capacity to fill a bathing suit."
