New York TimesRachel SaltzIt hits its themes too squarely on the nose and hits them for about an hour too long.

User ReviewTanvir MPrakash Jha's 'Satyagraha' is a film with lofty ambitions and a great sense of justice, undone ultimately by a severe lack of subtlety and a simplistic understanding of its ultimate denouement. It is, however, buoyed by even-handed direction and solid performances by a star cast led by Indian acting legend Amitabh Bachchan and featuring Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Arjun Rampal and a superb Manoj Bajpayee. Based loosely on the anti-corruption protests spearheaded by Anna Hazare a few years ago, the film tells the story of Dwarka Anand (played with regal restraint by Bachchan) who slaps a corrupt government official, and in doing so unleashes a wave of popular protest. Devgn plays the capitalist who changes hear to spearhead Anand's campaign, Kapoor Khan a journalist, Rampal a boots-on-the-ground social worker and the chameleonic Bajpayee essays the role of Balraj Singh, a wily amoral politician. The story and script by Anjum Rajabali, Prakash Jha and Rutvik Oza resonates on many levels, and aims, to a great extent succeeding, to spotlight the corruption so rampant in the system and the countless people it victimizes. Jha's use of location and especially crowds is impressive, even though he does try to pander to popular taste with a few ill-judged playback songs that don't quite work, given the context. The film wears its ambitions and most everything else squarely on its sleeve, functioning with the sensibility of a slap in the face - which could be just the pick-me-up the system needs.
User ReviewSurajit Kumar MOnly good performance by Manoj. Rest, ladies stuff........emotional.
User ReviewNiraj VPrakash Jha!!!!! Why do you keep making such similar movies all the time. Its difficult to tell which one you're watching. Throughout this one, I kept thinking I was in Aarakshan!!!! The overall story is about the whole Anna Hazare wave that swept through the country last year, and which, expectedly, fizzled out through self sabotage, something that Indians are very adept at. This movie would be a big fat zero were it not for 2 people. Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor, Arjun Rampal are there to bulk up the known faces on the screen, and god knows what Dia Mirza was trying to do in this one. The 2 people I was referring to above are: Amitabh Bachchan! This movie is worth watching for this man's performance. Admittedly he does go a bit OTT in a few scenes (Mr Bachchan, please meet up with me and I will give you further guidance........yea right!!), but for the large part he puts in a stellar performance, controlled and aggressive at the same time. The scene where he metes out just desserts to the Collector, is really good. Kudos as well to Mr Bachchan's makeup man, he gets it down perfectly, all throughout the movie. Manoj Bajpayee! Now this is a man who knows what acting is, and makes you forget you are watching Manoj in action, he slips into the role of Balram Singh (Home Minister of the State) so convincingly. His lines are delivered with the masked danger and subtle humiliation that one expects from a politician fighting for survival. After Gangs of Wasseypur, Special 26 and Shootout At Wadala, the Bajypayee train thunders on unabated. So, you might notice that I haven't bothered commenting on any other aspect of the movie, and that is because nothing really made me go "Aha!" I would suggest you watch this only if: 1) You are an Amitabh Bachchan fan (though show me someone in India who isn't!!!) 2) You are a Manoj Bajpayee fan 3) Someone else is paying for your ticket Otherwise, you will waste 152.04 minutes of your life. Oh, and for those of you who are wondering, for me it was all of the above ;-) ;-) ;-)
User ReviewRohan Wits a story which has so much meat that the cook got over awed and burnt it. content wise this is a great film screenplay wise horrible. The cinematic liberties taken are ridiculous amrita rao sleeping outside the lockup was a bit much. simplification of deals in the government was astoundingly stupid. Kareena Kapoor KHAN was wasted, aJAY dEVGAN PLAYED HIS PART AS WELL AS WAS WRITTENand the star of the show was Manoj Bajpee. All in all Mr Jhan Janta Talks and Janta Walks out of the theater.
User ReviewMohamedbaquir Nthe movie tried to cash on the present anti corruption theme in india but the story was too weak.holding a gathering for a real cause as a sign of support and unity is one thing and making peaple gather and waste their money for watching a movie is another thing....brilliant work by mr.bachchan again as always and well supported by arjun, ajay, manoj n kareena but the weak script let their efforts down. watch it only if you are a die hard aam aadmi party supporter guys :p
