Movie Reviews

New York Post - 8/10 by V.A. MusettoThe star of the movie is Caeli Veronica Smith, 12, an accomplished violinist who frequently performs in the park. Seeing her play in person would be worth the bus trip to Philly.
Philadelphia Inquirer - 8/10 by Carrie RickeyIt succeeds as a vivid video album of the metropolis at the millennium, a lilting musical album of the varied carols Americans play and an all-too-rare depiction of what the pursuit of happiness actually looks like.
Film Journal International - 8/10 by Lewis BealeWhat comes across is how important open spaces like this are to urban dwellers, how they enhance quality of life and become citified versions of village squares.
The New York Times - 6/10 by Laura KernThere are certainly more unpleasant ways to spend an hour and a half, but it's unlikely that Rittenhouse Square will generate much interest outside Philadelphia.
Village Voice - 4/10 by Nick SylvesterWith just enough art-lack and speak-for-itself whiz (call me cheesy), this doc understands the famoustorical Philly park's appeal: Hot girls sunbathe there, and the bums are ka-razy.
The Hollywood Reporter - 4/10 by Frank ScheckDoesn't quite manage to elevate its subject to a sufficiently interesting level for anyone who isn't already one of its frequent visitors. A good stroll inside your nearest city park would provide a more edifying experience.
New York Daily News - 4/10 by Elizabeth WeitzmanAt its best moments, the film offers a tender portrait of the park's youngest regulars, charmingly earnest performers from a nearby music school. But then, inevitably, their stories fade into a backdrop, as his camera turns to catch yet more women sunning in the square.
User Review - 8/10 by Tio BDowney at his least silly, but that's okay with me! I saw the man himself present it here in Philly--it wasn't at the Prince, but it should have been, because Downey is a prince.
User Review - 1/10 by HelenaThis movie is downright creepy. The perspective of an elderly, pompous, out-of-towner is not that interesting, his choice of interview questions, all pretty much relating to girl watching in the park, are trivial. His interview subjects, local celebrities, don't seem interesting enough to hold the general public's attention, and for us Philadelphian's, they don't show us anything about the people but their surface gloss, which we're already sick of. The girl watching angle is silly. And the only beautiful women in the park are under 30? I beg to differ there. A silly movie, a missed opportunity, a must NOT see (except for the musical performances).
