The fascinating complexity of high school debate gives way to a portrait of the equally complex racial and class bias of American education in Greg Whiteley's riveting documentary. Initially a portrait of top-flight debaters from well-funded, mostly white schools-like nationally ranked Sam Iola and Matt Andrews of Highland Park, Texas-the film deepens when it changes focus to Richard Funches and Louis Blackwell from Long Beach's Jordan squad. While gifted traditional debaters in their own right, the two decide to challenge the usefulness of the jargon-filled, 400-word-per-minute style of modern debate (known as "the spread") by steering their debates toward issues of personal experience and dialogue. What is the use of refining an argument, they stress, when it does not affect the reality of a person's locale and particular life? Why must individual perspective and bias be masked? For many, these questions present such a radical interpretive shift that competitors and judges crumble in front of them. Contrasting Fuches and Blackwell's attempt to challenge the system with Andrews' relentless pursuit to excel in it and win the prestigious Tournament of Champions, Whiteley deftly explores the disparities between the debaters, their styles, and their resources. Alternately inspiring and polarizing, Resolved reveals a constantly shifting sport that is as much philosophy as competition.

User Review - 10/10 by Priscilla GI was surfing channels and came across this documentary on HBO. I was not sure I would find it interesting, but it was honestly intriguing. It not only delves into debating but also into the lack of diversity found in many institutions not just debate. However, it not only showed this inconsistency but people actually seeking to bring it to light and change it. Although it ended in a bit of a sad note, it was a good reality check.
User Review - 10/10 by Dan BIncredible. An extraordinary documentary on Competitive High School Debate with implications far past its own resolution to follow the careers of high school debaters. Examines the importance of argument and frameworks for argument to effecting social change in society. Also an incredible profile of what its like to be a gifted student in highschool today. Loved it.
User Review - 10/10 by Nathan HMind-blowing. One of the best documentaries I've seen in the last few months, this chronicle of high school debate is at times hilarious, other times sad, but always riveting. It's been awhile since a movie has literally made my jaw drop.
User Review - 10/10 by Bert KI am completely biased in my appreciation of this movie. It is a documentary about team policy debate in high school, which I did for a number of years. If you were a debater, then you will LOVE this documentary. If not? Well, I'd be curious to see how interesting you find it.
User Review - 10/10 by Charles SNiche movie, but soooo important to whats important to me
User Review - 8/10 by Tara AI had no idea debating was all about speed-talking now. Fascinating movie featuring some very compelling kids.
User Review - 8/10 by Jen Bit opened my eyes to the sad state of high school debate. these kids... sound like robots who are unable to piece together their own cogent thoughts without regurgitating someone else's. it's sad. any how... i appreciated the film and the way it challenged the way we go along with everything without challenging it with our own thoughts and ideas because the status quo dictates so we follow. it went beyond a film reflecting the state of modern high school debate teams, but really questioned how we follow rhetoric and don't demand change. and it addresses even deeper that we can't ask for change if we haven't actually thought about it with our own words in our minds. you don't challenge and ask for change if you don't truly understand. i don't think that made any sense at all. oh well. and last bit. i am not a debater and i loved it.
User Review - 8/10 by Aaron HI know very little about debate and I'm not sure if that means I liked the movie more or less than I would have if i did. Regardless, I thought it was a great film
User Review - 8/10 by Giffy GIf the argument I found was in fact the argument of the movie, it was subtle, well-argued, and clever. Moreover, unlike many argumentative movies, this one did not beat me over the head with it, and instead emphasized on informing and entertaing me.
User Review - 8/10 by Nate Ra fascinating look at real life high school debate teams and how the nature of debating itself has changed in the US. what was once an activity based on arguing the pros and cons of an issue, has become a competition based on who can argue using the best techniques. what starts out as a film merely documenting the lives of high school debaters takes an interesting turn and delves into the notion of inherent racism not only in the debating realm, but in the educational system and other institutions which are labeled under the pretext of serving the greater good. an interesting and thought provoking film!
