New York TimesMike HaleIt's also a pretty familiar story, and "Reindeer," despite Mr. Neuvonen's verve and Jani's charisma, can drag. Like a lot of addiction stories, it starts to mirror the monotony and self-absorption of the addict's life.
Time OutDavid FearWhile it never hits the gritty heights of you-are-there junky journalism à la Larry Clark's "Tulsa," you still feel as if you've personally toured the abyss.
User ReviewKieran CTop film, thanx... i see that some have failed to see addiction speking through the voice box of man...
User ReviewOssi Ttää ois parasta valistusmateriaalia kasi- tai ysiluokkalaisille.
User ReviewJohn TAn affecting portrait of a pointless life. The subject, Jani, is a 19 year old welfare recipient and small-time thief, addicted to opiates and sharing a flat with fellow addicts in a desolate Arctic city. The cinema verite style documentary is filmed by a friend and fellow user. As his life spirals downward, we follow Jani on a European binge where he discovers that the change of locale has not provided the motivation he sought to turn his life around. Despite his weakness, and thanks to the first-time director's impressive ability to make a documentary subject into a real person, we cannot help becoming fond of Jani and hopeful he can rejoin the world of the living. The conclusion gives us no reason to be optimistic. And for those willing to Google the lives of both director and subject in the years following this film's release, the news is even more dispiriting. Even the young can fall prey to the harsh verdict of an indifferent universe.
User ReviewJuhani LKaru dokumentti siita, kuinka elama voi menna huumeiden vuoksi rempalleen. Erittain hyva elokuva, jonka jokaisen tulisi nahda vain senkin vuoksi, etta pystyisi ajattelemaan asioita myos toiselta kantilta.
User ReviewJussi OVery sad, but extremely well-executed drug addict documentary from Finland.
User ReviewPhillip SI Love this documentary, i was an opiate addict for 8years peaking at 500mg of Morphine a day before i got clean, this doc. reminds me alot of my youth and the idiotic things we would do thinking we were untouchable it also shows how drugs are a problem no matter who you are or where you are drugs will be close by. PS... I would like to add, they take the subutex out of context, if it wasnt for subutex or suboxone i would most likely still be an addict, they have helped many opiate addicts get over their addiction, few abuse them in the way of this film but it can really save someones life as well, i took it for 1year under the care of a Dr. and have never taken an opiate since
User ReviewTuukka PA real life story of a drug addict in the cold northern Finland. Director Neuvonen shot his friends (mostly of Jani, 19-year-old dreamer) with DV cam during their time in the cold Rovaniemi and trip in the southern Europe. Honest and somewhat disturbing view of a young man who has succumbed to addiction and fallen outside normal society without preacing (which is far too common in these types of docus).
