On Quality Street in 1805 England, a gentleman passerby is an event, not only for the lady being called upon, but also for the ever-nosy female neighbors. When Dr. Valentine Brown calls on 20-year-old Phoebe Throssel, she almost expects a marriage proposal; instead, he has come to tell her that he has enlisted in the army to fight in the Napoleonic Wars, with no romantic syllable spoken. 10 years later, Phoebe and her older sister Susan now run a school and neither has married. At first sight of Phoebe, Captain Brown hardly recognizes her--the years haven't been kind to her and she is no longer the pretty young thing he once knew. Heartbroken at his reaction, she decides to pay attention to her appearance, realizing that she has been neglecting it. When Captain Brown returns, he is again stunned, and his reaction spurs Patty, the Throssels' maid, to introduce her as Livvy, their visiting niece. Captain Brown seems enthralled with "Livvy"--as does many a young returning junior officer. Phoebe wades into the situation with no plan except to keep masquerading as Livvy, string along all the junior officers, and make Captain Brown jealous enough to propose marriage to her, which she will then rebuke as a ridiculous suggestion. Will Phoebe be able to pull off the scheme, which includes fooling the ever-knowing spinster Willoughby sisters, the Throssel sisters' closest friends? Or will Captain Brown's admission to Livvy make Phoebe change her plan of attack?

Movie Reviews

Ozus' World Movie Reviews - 7/10 by Dennis SchwartzEven the film's star Katharine Hepburn said she found it repulsive.
Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC) - 7/10 by Ken HankeGiven the cast and the director, this is very disappointing.
User Review - 8/10 by Keenan SThis film considered to be one of the worst films Katharine Hepburn ever made, and even she herself disliked it by describing it as being "no good" in her autobiography. Quality Street is a peculiar film in Katharine Hepburn's filmography, but I really enjoyed this quirky and strange romantic comedy. While the script is somewhat of a mess, the cast keeps the film lively, especially Hepburn who embraces the goofy moments gleefully. It's also surprisingly funny since I laughed quite a few times while watching it. Overall, I think it is a very underrated and very enjoyable romantic comedy. It's much better than what people give it credit for.
User Review - 6/10 by James H5.5/10. There a very few Katherine Hepburn movies that I feel are sub par, and this is one of them. I didn't care for her performance and the film is way too talky, bringing on some boredom. However, the costumes and sets are wonderful, as is the supporting cast.
User Review - 6/10 by Scott SQuality Street (1937) -- [6.0] -- Katharine Hepburn stars in this costume romantic comedy that hinges on a case of mistaken identity. Cliches abound, but a charming cast comes in for the save. The first half is better than the last, especially when timid teacher Fay Bainter must punish an unruly student, and when prim-and-proper Estelle Winwood reacts to an unseemly "winker."
User Review - 4/10 by jay nSilly light drama with Kate in a dual role. She's unusually skittish in both, not one of her better performances. Although she's surrounded by some of the best actors working at the time this is a minor film, which would have benefited had it been shot in color. A flop on its release this is one of the films that landed Hepburn on the box office poison list and hastened her flight to the stage for a few years.
