German village Igelheim's backward priest hopes his sons will succeed him after education in the bishop's cathedral school, but the elder succumbs to disease and the younger lacks any intellectual drive. Traveling teacher Aesculapius arranges for the inquisitive daughter Johanna to be enrolled, against their father's wishes. Unfit for the boys-only dorm, she gets to stay with Count Gerold, incurring his wife's due jealousy. She's to be dismissed, but survives a Viking pillaging slaughter and assumes brother Johannes' identity to join a monastery, where she becomes the infirmary's trainee. Fleeing exposure as female, she arrives in Rome. As a protégée of rivals in the viper nest-like papal court, she ends up elected as pope, but carries Count Gerold's baby, guaranteeing exposure.

User ReviewMarco SA really, really good movie based on a true story. Although the movie is extremely long (2h 20min), it never gets boring. The life of the girl Joan is put in stunning pictures and touching stories. The movie really transfers the suffers and pains of Joan she has to take throughout her life until she reaches her aim - she's the first woman who is being elected as Pope, although she had to pretend her whole life to be a boy.
User ReviewMarsha MMagistral!

User ReviewShinta POne of the few movies which can keep up to the book. A great strong story well told. John Goodman was the only cast role who wasn't convincing and more like a comedy character but all other characters expecially Joan as a grown woman as well as being a child and young woman where extremely well casted! The CGI of Rome was a little poor but all other sets where well choosen and convincing. the story is easy to follw and apprehand even if you haven't read the book which I strongly recommend to do anyway! due to the very late change in cast and director the movie doesn't come up with any extra toppings or surprises as I guess there might not have been enough time to realize any special input / ideas the final director had (just assuming). All in all it's a great movie properly excecuted and well told with an overall great cast and a strong touching story. Go see it!
