Edgar's feud extends to his family doctor, who stops by Christmas Eve to wish his family a Merry Christmas. That feud is because Edgar refuses to pay his outstanding bills to the doctor. On Christmas, Edgar's wife, Florence, believes she mistakenly gave him poison - some of her brother's chemicals used in his photography work - instead of his medicine, that poison which is supposed to result in an agonizing death. Florence's brother knows that she really did give Edgar his real medicine, and as such co-opts the doctor to get back at Edgar by playing on the fact that Edgar thinks he's dying.
