Movie Reviews

Fantastica Daily - 9/10 by Chuck O'LearyAn interesting historical drama about a little-known incident that would have been much better had someone like John Milius directed it.
TheMovieReport.com - 5/10 by Michael DequinaWeighed down by the traditional Hollywood trappings.
Los Angeles Times - 5/10 by Kevin ThomasHas the stuff of a cavalry classic...but it lacks the vision and personality to attain such a level of artistry.
Film.com - 3/10 by Henry Cabot BeckIt has every element necessary to be a classic, and it never comes anywhere near achieving that potential.
Variety - 3/10 by Robert KoehlerSuffers greatly from both a visibly constrained budget and an extraordinarily dated feeling.
L.A. Weekly - 2/10 by Paul CullumBasically a TNT Western with Tom Berenger in the lead.
User Review - 10/10 by Chris-and Tprobably the saddest movie I've ever seen
User Review - 10/10 by Sean SNot a huge fan when I first saw it in the early 2000s, but I've grown to really like this film. Despite a limited budget, it holds up surprisingly well and still feels contemporary after nearly 20 years. It also stands out from all of the TNT war films and other historical war dramas that came out in the 90s. Honestly, how many films ask American audiences to root against the American army? There are scenes in this film that get burned into your head and never go away.
User Review - 10/10 by Rebecca DThis excellent movie tells the story of the Batallon de San Patricio, (St. Patrick's Battalion). Before the Mexican-American War, religious and ethnic prejudice could be seen in the U.S. Army. Many Irish Catholics soldiers were victims of the protestant majority. A group of Irish immigrants deserted to Mexico. This movie delivers a different twist to the Mexican that has a touch of Irish flavor. In this movie, "One man's hero is another man's traitor."
User Review - 8/10 by Eva AYeah. There's a reason, folks why the Mexican/ American war of 1846-1848 DOES'T get made into many movies. We Americans like it when our guys are the heroes. So we like the Revolutionary War, Civil War, and WW II. When watching films of those wars, you can gorge yourself untill your heart's content on lessons about duty, honor, courage, liberty, decency, freedom, independence, compassion, democracy, and The American Way. The Spanish-American War and Mexican War, on the other hand, look like bold-faced land grabs by the US against weaker nations. The Mexican War in particular gets shafted in its role in US history. In it, the US stripped Mexico of about 1/2 its lands, creating Arizona, New Mexico, California, Nevada and parts of Colorodo and Texas. To this day it remains the second-most unpopular US war (second only to VietNam). Henry David Thoreau created the idea of Civil Disobedience while prostesting the war, and then-lieutenant Ulysses S. Grant considered it "one of the most unjust ever waged by a stronger against a weaker nation". One Man's Hero tells the story of (mostly)Irish Catholic immigrants in the 1840s who, desperate for money, enlisted in the US Army, only to be badly treated by the mostly Protestant officers and men of the Army. When (Catholic) Mexico enticed them to desert, they abandoned their new country, to which they had very weak and oft abused ties. The deserters form Los Batalionos San Patricios (St. Patrick's Battalion) and fight with the Mexicans in the 1846-48 war. A grim fate awaits them all after the war their side is destined to loose. In Mexico, they are remembered as heroes to this day. No nation loves a traitor. From Benedict Arnold to the Rosenbergs to Robert Hanson to John Walker Lindh, betrayers are remembered as the most despised and vile of men & women. But the unfortunates of the St. Patrick Battalion make for the some of the most sympathetic traitors and deserters ever portrayed.
