Originally from the Midlands, Jimmy is currently living in Glasgow eking out a living as a hapless petty crook. One day, he sees his old family and friends--including his older foster sister Carol, her boyfriend/his old buddy Charlie, Jimmy's ex-wife and Carol's best friend Shirley, and Jimmy's preteen daughter Marlene--on a television talk show, baring their souls to a national audience. He has not seen any of them in years. On the show, Shirley rejects the marriage proposal of her slightly-awkward live-in boyfriend Dek. Jimmy sees her answer to Dek as a reason to head back to the Midlands to reunite with his past, especially with Shirley and Marlene. Already humiliated, Dek is less than thrilled to see Jimmy back in their lives. In the ensuing duel between Jimmy and Dek for Shirley and Marlene's affections, others get caught up in the crossfire. Meanwhile, three of Jimmy's equally-hapless crook friends from Glasgow come looking for him; he left them high and dry at their latest heist and absconded with all their money.

UK CriticIan Waldron-MantganiOffbeat, daring and really quite a treat.
Capital Times (Madison, WI)Rob ThomasPut in Shirley's shoes, most women would be hunting around for a Door Number 3, and that's where Midlands ultimately fails to connect.
Detroit Free PressTerry LawsonWhat Leone did for cowboys and crime, Once Upon a Time in the Midlands does for a more contemporary genre.
Dallas Morning NewsAngela ShahThough Shirley is supposed to be torn between the passion of her younger days and the tender yet boring Dek, there seems to be little chemistry between her and Jimmy.
National PostChris KnightAs a spoof, the film does not seem to be trying too hard.
Chicago TribuneLoren KingMeadows clearly has a flair for working with actors and for depicting the rough-and-tumble of ordinary provincial lives. If he could go just a bit deeper, the truly great Midlands movie just might surface.

East Bay ExpressKelly VanceLike a Mike Leigh film on steroids, situations don't dawn slowly on these characters, they come crashing down on their heads.
Arkansas Democrat-GazettePhilip Martin...a wry and likable movie that contents itself with the petty concerns, complications and conflicts that compose modern life.
Seattle Post-IntelligencerPaula NechakIt's an interesting experiment that doesn't quite work.
