User Review - 10/10 by Atte HThis is a movie whose goodness is in the subtle development of the theme.
User Review - 10/10 by Alexander WThis is a breathtaking, courageous film, that is probably also the saddest and most emotional animation I have ever seen. The pacing is deliberate and there is an abundance of spiritual themes from friendship, happiness to loss and sacrifice. The images, words, and music will stick with me for a long time to come.
User Review - 10/10 by Alex HBeloved Japanese poet Kenji Miyazawa's most famous work, Night on the Galactic Railroad, seems to have slipped through most cracks, and is now criminally unheard of outside of Japan (as is Kenji Miyazawa himself). But, for me, this animated adaptation sits easily among the greatest children's movies ever made. While any synopsis is doomed to miss the point: young Giovanni is unexpectedly whisked away on a ghostly, space-faring locomotive, and undergoes something of a journey. Due to the movie's deliberate, contemplative pace, most kids would find it unspeakably boring, as I fear would most adults... Nonetheless, this is a powerful, transfixing, dreamy masterpiece, rich with psychedelic details and memorable scenes. Ghibli's Only Yesterday now has a serious competitor for the title of My Favorite Animated Movie Ever.
User Review - 10/10 by Haley GAn absolutely beautiful film. Having read the book myself, I really expected the film to dissapoint, but it's very good! Several scenes in the movies brought me to tears. I also love the brotherly relationship between Giovanni and Campanella, between someone who's poor and one who is wealthy. Lovely movie, and I definitely reccomend it!
User Review - 10/10 by Mariah CThe story comes off as a bit confusing at first, but the animation is amazing. Giovanni and his friend go on a trip on a train to the stars and there is more to this trip than his friend is willing to say. You see life after death! Kenji Miyazawa the writer who wrote the novel wrote this in response to his sister's passing and it went on to a classic of Japanese science fiction.
User Review - 10/10 by Pablo GThis animation, based off of a children's book written by Kenji Miazawa is an extaordinarily deep, and very fetching movie. Pulling in elements of Soren Kirkegaard's philosophies on life, death, the afterlife and alienation in life makes it more interesting to view, not as an animation, but a kind stroll through the mind. I first recieved the movie as a present, after pining for its intriguing use of... Furries, I fell in love with its touching beauty, slow pace, and the pure blindness that we have when trying to comprehend what, by nature, we aren't supposed to. Giovanni's blindness to what really happened to Campanella, or his refusal to see what happened and where he was, shows us more about ourselves than most people would get. Sometimes ignorance is bliss, and sometimes letting go is hard, but once we see the true beauty in death, we can learn to let go, and ultimately enjoy what time we have, not with just our friends, but with ourselves as well.
User Review - 8/10 by Séamus MNight on the Galactic Railroad isn't your traditional family film. It deals with some incredibly deep themes, as well as having a slow meditative pace. We follow a young cat (changed from human in the original book) called Giovanni. Giovanni has no time for himself. His father is away, his mother is sick, and when he isn't at school he has to work. One evening the family's delivery of milk never comes, so Giovanni goes to get it. He rests on top of a hill before being confronted by a train. He gets on and finds his friend Campenella. From there the duo encounter a number of passengers each with a strange story to tell. This film is certainly all about the metaphysical. Each story strengthens the themes of religion and sacrifice. It gets highly emotional at times. The imagery is often surreal but always memorable. The animation is calm in both colours and movement. This film is presented in chapters, which I think may be a better way to digest it. It's something no country but Japan would try, and the ending is so powerful it really does make the journey worth it. Mature and thoughtful, if sometimes a little slow.
User Review - 8/10 by Shannon MBeautifully crafted and made. Though some dialogue didn't exactly made any sense, and the character development between Giovanni & Campanella wasn't as smooth, but it was certainly a brilliant movie. If you were to put this movie with all other typical Japanese animation films (including Studio Ghibli), it's actually quite as distinguishable as all the Ghibli films. You can tell the difference and all that. The weirdest part of all for this movie would probably be the end credits, where out of nowhere someone talks about something which doesn't exactly make any sense, and you wouldn't even know which character is actually doing that talking. The pace of the movie is just too uneven, too slow for the 1st 30 minutes, slightly too fast at some points and so on. yeah. Little flaw here and there. This must probably be this film's director's first film. A little polish and it'll do the trick. This film has all the makings to be a classic but sadly only 1/8 people today only know this film and among them maybe around 2/4 watch it. But I know this film will arise again someday, and when it does I know it'll capture the hearts of many from young to old.
User Review - 8/10 by Victor MThis animated Japanese film could be disturbing for some people. It is far away from a typical Disney's film. A fantasy story where we are touched by issues like life, death, afterlife, goodness and evil, myths, God. Interesting as the Universe, the Milky Way, and the stars are referred along the story.
User Review - 6/10 by Sarah JThis film is pretty, but it is SLOW. Very, very slow. Could pass as mellow but really I ended up putting it in fast forward. Altogether too much of it is one character looking at another, looking forward, out the window, then back again. SLLLOOOOOOOOOOWWWWW.
