Leave your thoughts about Neil Young: Solo Trans.
| User ReviewSam BDuring a severe low point in both of their careers that only one of them would recover from, Neil Young and Hal Ashby teamed up to make this monument to 80's cheese. Starting off looking like an 80's travelogue/ local TV special on Young and his bizarre career moves at the time, it eventually turns into a one man show of some of Young best songs from the 70's. The second half of the show is where things get weird, he plays songs from his electronica album Trans where he channels his inner David Byrne and then his fictional band The Shocking Pinks accompanies him on a bunch of early Rock N Roll inspired songs ending off with a strong rendition of Do You Wanna Dance. This isn't the folk/ country Young from the 70's and its not the grunge Young that took over in the 90's, he wanted to show his range. As it stands now, this is a pretty good document of this interesting time in his career. Asbhy's direction unfortunately doesn't come across as strong, even with cameramen like John Toll shooting the concert, it looks pretty standard for an 80's concert film. If you're a Young fan and you want to see him play with some positive energy and enthusiasm, I recommend this concert film, if you're in it for Ashby there's no real reason to see this. |
