| User ReviewCosmo BI saw the hard hitting documentary Nefarious: Merchant of Souls for the second time last night at a screening in Soho, London. This film, remarkably written, directed and produced by Benjamin Nolot, does not get any easier the more it is viewed. In just under two shocking hours we are taken on a whirlwind tour through one of the greatest scourges our 'advanced' civilisation has today, human sex trafficking. From the villages of Eastern Europe (in Moldova alone it is estimated TEN PERCENT of the population has been trafficked) to the seedy 'glamour' of Las Vegas casinos via Cambodian rural communities (seeing the vunerable children being sold by their own families was particulary heartbreaking ) there is no let up to the visual punch we are thrown and I would defy anyone to walk away unchanged in their resolve to be part of bringing liberation to these modern day slaves. This film is highlighting a thread of a web that is engulfing us as a society, a web that thrives on secrecy and complicity, encompassing child abuse, prostitution and pornography, and one that is growing at a terrifying rate. The invisible people working tirelessly behind the scenes to bring change are true heros of today, inheritors of the spirit that led Telemachus to a martyrdom which effectively ended gladiator sacrifice in Rome and self proclaimed 19th century 'fanatic for freedom' William Wilberforce to fearlessly combat slavery. The message of Nefarious is one that should bring a determination to every viewer to play their part in wiping each of these degrading violations of our fellow humans out completely. |

| User ReviewCarrie MAfter graduating from a media and entertainment university, I have seen and critiqued many documentaries over the last few years, and I would say that without a doubt, Nefarious: Merchant of souls is by far the best I have seen to date. Not only will the gripping story keep you in your seat, but the quality of the documentary is one that surpasses many. The documentary does not just give you a glimpse of what sex trafficking looks like, but it takes you all over the world and shows interviews from experts, survivors, traffickers, and johns to give the viewer a more complete understanding of this issue, and how it effects us all. In addition, Nefarious has a powerful message that needs to be shared with people around the globe. The issue of sex trafficking has burdened my heart for many years, and Nefarious is one of the best awareness tools to expose this injustice. |
| User ReviewDanton MThis is a truly eye-opening movie about human trafficking around the world, including the United States. Some of the numbers of trafficked women and children are astounding. I have only two issues with the show. First, several scenes, most memorably a dramatic kidnapping of a woman off the streets, are re-enactments. Interviews with actual victims are excellent, but I see re-enactments as a cheap way of heightening the drama of the movie. Second, all the "Jesus-is-with-me" testimonials at the end of the movie finally caused me to turn it off before finishing it. The hard work by people who risk their lives to save these women and children seems too often ignored in the speakers' eagerness to give credit to god for their salvation from prostitution. This is certainly a movie worth watching, though, and one that will stay with me for a long time. |
