User ReviewRobert CWell what do you know. War is hell. I like this movie though. Very entertaining.
User ReviewRodney Gthis is exactly the type of film i love. obsessed men, driven by war, making things, being mechanical, being diabolical. no back story. a remote setting. landscape, sky. thrilling aerial photography. it's a captain ahab story and presupposes many of the film moments in 'jaws' four years later. o'toole was never more placidly manic, hellbent will aflame in his famous blue eyes. the film is slowly paced, but deliberately constructed in a sure-handed way i wish more modern action films would emulate. great stuff.
User ReviewGreg WPretty decent war film and one of director Peter Yates neglected films. Peter O Toole is on fine form as Murphy ,the sole survivor of a merchant ship sunk by a ruthless U boat captain. Murphy decides to get his revenge whatever the cost and ropes in local engineer Breznan ,played wonderfully by Phillipe Noiret. Local Nurse Miss Hayden is of course dead set against all this macho posturing and just wants Murphy to see out the impending end of World War 2 ,which is constantly refered to is radio broadcasts . O Toole gives Murphy a dangerous and self destructive edge that no actor of his generation could match and the tension between him and Hayden feesl real because he was married to actress Sian Phillips at the time. Yates keeps everything ticking along nicely and the final showdown is expertly staged ,an excellent war film with plenty to say on the nature of revenge.
User ReviewGerard BEnjoyable movie which allows Peter O'Toole to demonstrate his ability to play eccentric, tempestuous characters. Not a typical war movie and all the better for it but it still reminds us of the ruthlessness of the Germans even in seemingly innocuous environments. As the mad Irishman, however, Murphy is more than able to put them in their place.
User ReviewAura TAn intriguing cat and mouse war plot, although it is so far removed from the central theatres of war it never feels like a WWII story. O'Toole's character comes off more strange than convincing, but it all adds up to something a little different in the genre.
User Reviewwyatte pMovie now showing its age...You'd never guess you were in Venezuela and the stereotypes were laid on a bit thick...otherwise, if you're a fan of Peter o'Toole, it is worth a look see
User ReviewJesper JThis film was a bit mental, like the central character, and not what I expected at all. It is certainly 'different' though, which is no bad thing.
