VarietyDennis HarveyMr. Pip doesn't start going seriously awry until its second half, when things get more eventful in ways that are compacted from the novel yet seem more disconnected.
The PlaylistNikola GrozdanovicAdamson claims that this was a labor of love, but it leaves you with the feeling that it was made for those who've read the book, and in such a lackadaisical approach to storytelling that it's unlikely to attract new fans.
Urban CinefileAndrew L. Urban"..from a story about literature as the door to imagination and inner freedom to the brutality of ignorance and the lack of imagination, from a coming of age story to a character portrait, and a hero's journey
Screen InternationalDavid D'ArcyIt's ambitious, it's bloody and it's confusing.
3AWJim SchembriBased on the novel by Lloyd Jones, the film is a visually lush, surprising, moving story that wears its unusual premise with a deftly blended mixture of lyricism and brutality.
LimelightLynden BarberWhat [director Andrew Adamson] hasn't been able to do is pull off the story's central narrative shock in a way that preserves its unity rather than splitting it right down the middle.
QuickflixSimon MiraudoIt will eventually find a home in classrooms, much like Great Expectations before it. However, I don't expect it to invigorate or inspire kids as Mr. Dickens' work regularly does.
User ReviewPaul PAn amazing story (if somewhat undertold) that gives a real sense of what it was like in Bougainville during the time of the rebel insurgency. Hugh Laurie is fantastic as Watts but it is the amazing Xzannjah as Matilda that really steals the show. While we still had questions at the end of the film, they were questions we were happy to discuss afterwards...and that is a sign of a good film, I think.
