Movie Reviews

Gay Essential - 9/10 by Alexander RyllMala Mala is a highly entertaining emotional documentary that takes the audience from the seedy nightlife, and ultimately onto the steps of the state capital in a rousing upbeat finale.
Movie Mezzanine - 9/10 by Kyle TurnerMala Mala is infinitely interesting in its consideration of the power dynamics between the viewer and the subject in a less common type of gaze.
Film-Forward.com - 9/10 by Nora Lee MandelFascinating, absorbing, sensitive documentary. . .guided through the trans community in Puerto Rico. . ., thoughtful about male/female stereotypes [and] individuality.
Moveable Fest - 8/10 by Stephen SaitoThe contrast illuminates the culture, which inherently deals with the dilemma of being true to oneself underneath a skin different than the one they were born into.
The Film Stage - 8/10 by John FinkColorful and beautifully shot, Mala Mala is occasionally as tender and provocative as some of Pedro Almodóvar's best work.
Movie Mezzanine - 8/10 by Casey CiprianiA poignant and celebratory look at the transgender community of Puerto Rico.
User Review - 10/10 by Carlos MIt was well done. The only thing is that changed languages often and not many english captions were provided. Primary language would spanish.
User Review - 8/10 by Needfor SI only clicked this movie bcs this girl is very attractive.
User Review - 8/10 by Peter FAn enlightening look at transsexuality, that also has one of the best end credits sequences you'll see all year!
User Review - 6/10 by Eric HThe film has a lot going for it. It does a good job humanizing the interviewees without whitewashing them or making them appear noble-- and I credit Santini and Sickles for this. They also have created a very professional film that makes quite the emotional impact on the viewers and it has some excellent points to make. However, it isn't at all surprising that portions of the film are very adult and explicit. This is not a film you'd show your kids and I am sure some of it is bound to offend some viewers' sensibilities. Many might be very accepting of the LGBT community while still not wanting to see some of the more graphic scenes in the documentary. None of this is meant as a critique--it's more to let the viewer know so they can make an informed decision as to whether or not to watch the film.
