The New York Review of BooksRobert MazzoccoAn unconscious parody of Visconti's own embattled romanticism, a diatribe against "privileged liberty," an old morality play in which the free soul is the damned soul-a dyspeptic Visconti, as it were, lecturing himself.
Film Comment MagazineJonathan RomneyIt can feel cumbersome, frustratingly disjointed, at times certainly a heavy watch. And yet this full-length Ludwig... feels today like a painting whose images and forms can be at least freshly recognized.
New York TimesVincent CanbyVisconti has been such an intelligent film maker in the past that it's difficult to believe that Ludwig could be quite as bereft of ideas as it is.
Chicago Sun-TimesRoger EbertPerhaps only Visconti, who seems obsessed with the gloomy side of decadence, could have made Ludwig II of Bavaria seem boring.
User ReviewAlex BUsed, confused, disturbed: poor Ludwig comes across here as quite sympathetic. But not so as to prevent or discourage us from welcoming/cheering the end of monarchy/aristocracy. On the contrary, we see/feel the limits (to be overcome) of all the ruling powers/authorities of the age. And therein lies (at least an aspect of) Visconti's brilliance/excellence.
User ReviewElina BShows a very different Sisi than the Sissi-films. Helmut Berger is fantastic as the Märchenkönig.
User ReviewEmily BOK, you need a long afternoon to watch this film but it's definitely worth it. Visconti's attention to detail is amazing and with the sumptuous cinematography and excellent performances, it's a good investment of those 4 hours.
User ReviewPrivate UCan't believe there are no other reviews for this! A brilliant historical epic, a portrait of a tortured mind and a study of a changing world....what's not to like?!
