User ReviewJack TFor those who've known me for longer than 10 minutes it quickly becomes pretty apparent that I'm a huge Lovecraft fan. Even before I discovered his stories, my own writings already had a natural kinship with his, so, needless to say, when I did discover him his stories became a large influence on me. I love the epic scope of his mythology. I really wish I could have read his stories as they came out, though, a lot of those stories didn't see publication until after he died. Told through pictures and interviews with top names in contemporary horror and sci-fi-such as Neil Gaiman, Peter Straub, John Carpenter, Ramsey Campbell, Guillermo del Toro, and Stuart Gordon-this documentary takes us through Lovecraft's childhood to his death, through his inspirations for writing, his brief marriage, and the genesis of his Cthulhu Mythos. It's incredible how many people were inspired by Lovecraft, so much that if you see anything in horror and sci-fi nowadays it probably has its roots in Lovecraft. A very interesting documentary.
User ReviewRob RNice H.P. Lovecraft documentary that really knows it audience. Knowing that anyone who is apt to watch a documentary on Lovecraft is probably interested in horror and dark fantasy, so they filmmakers wisely interviewed many of todays masters of horror and fantasy, including Neil Gaiman, John Carpenter, Guillermo del Toro, Ramsey Campbell, and the like. Well worth watching if you're a fan of Lovecraft.
User ReviewTrent RWith plenty of good visuals, and some interesting interview subjects, this is a pretty good introduction to the man behind the stories. Lovecraft, who is pretty much the father of modern horror, as Poe is the father of suspense, is a complicated figure. I think this documentary does a pretty good job of looking at him from multiple angles. Some of the interviewees clearly have their own somewhat extreme take on the man, but the film lets you hear each idea without necessarily passing judgment on them. If you're a fan of the stories, this is a good look at some of what went into writing them. If you haven't read the stories, you should.
User ReviewJoão AA solid documentary on the men himself and the society around him, and how the interaction between the two (or lack of one) influenced his writtings.
User ReviewChuck NA superb documentary on one of the most influential & greatest Horror story writers of all time.
User ReviewCarlos SBeing a longtime H.P. Lovecraft fan I was very interested to see a documentary about the man and his work. This doco is very insightful and interviews many experts in the field of supernatural and horror genres in print and film. My only complaint is that it is too short and can not go into as much depth story wise and leaves out some of his important work "The Dreamquest of unknown Kadath" all together. So, overall, a really interesting doco about a very interesting man. If you like this writer, I highly recommend it.
User ReviewEric SAn interesting documentary about horror writer HP Lovecraft. Nothing really new but the documentary is well made and covers some fascinating insights from fellow Mythos writers and Lovecraft fans such as Neil Gaiman and Stuart Gorden. Could have done with more insight into the Mythos but if you're a fan of HPL you'll enjoy this I think.
User ReviewGordon BWhether you've read Lovecraft or not (and I have not), you have undoubtedly seen or heard of the influences of his imaginations. From films like Hell Boy, to D&D, to horror cliches, fans of his work have carried on his dark creations. This solid documentary may no be tantalizing but it does a decent job exploring how Lovecraft came to his decisions in fiction and in life. For those who like the writer, or biographies in general this is an interesting watch.
User ReviewMatthew MA retelling of lovecraft's life through interviews with some famous writters and directors. The whole thing is unfortunately very dry and empty in what it has to offer. You get a full retelling of his life while fan art related to the stories being talked about shown on screen. The ending of the movie touches on the immortal impact of the Cthulhu on pop culture but doesnt go deep into it at all.
User ReviewKonrad RDocumentary about one of most (maybe THE most) influential horror author. A bit lacking on research and facts (Lovecraft was not exactly a social person) instead filled with praises from Gaiman, Carpenter and others. But it's maybe the only big documentary about the author, so if you're interested you don't have much choice...
