They are convinced that they want to enjoy their lives to the full and without compromises - and they demand the same of love. Together with Günther's sister Hilde they spend a weekend in a summer house in the country, outside Berlin. Paul is fascinated by the girl and falls in love with her. And at first it looks like Paul's feelings are returned. But Hilde loves another. Secretly, she's meeting with a young, good-looking boy named Hans - Günther's former lover. But Hans, who works in the kitchen of a restaurant/dance club, is a young man from a much lower class. Then an excessive party takes place in the garden of the summer house. When Hans surprisingly joins the celebration, a roller coaster ride of feelings is set into motion which soon gets very much out of control.

User ReviewJannik GIf you're making a list of films to see before you die surely Love in thoughts should be on it, a masterpiece in my opinion which deserves to be seen by everyone, its just a shame it will not, but seek it out if you can. The story is great two best friends one rich(Gunther), one poor(Paul) escape to the country alone, many relationships take place with no spectacular outcome. Their thoughts are plagued by love which ultimately leads to the pact; a suicide pact, when they can no longer love they shall kill one another. It comes across as a love story but do not be fooled love in thoughs is in fact a well paced thriller with just a fantastic cast, I've noticed Bruhl in many films before now and what can I say he's definately one to watch, as for Diehl it was my first encounter with him and I'll be watching his future projects closely. The film opens with Paul being interrogated about Gunthers death, and through flashbacks our story begins to unravel(Meant in a good way). One not to be missed.
User ReviewAmanda WI rented this simply for the Magnificent Anna Maria Muhe and was not expecting much. What I found was an achingly beautiful story. So glad I rented this.

User ReviewNatalie TMy favorite movie ever. I watched it in Potsdam, Germany this summer, four times. I am in loooove! It is just the most beautiful film ever, from the cinematography to the music, and the acting...it's all superb. I bet it would be even better if I understood the original German, rather than having to read the subtitles.

User ReviewPatty DAn amazingly sensitive intense and lyrical film about the friendship of two German students in the 1920s, their bohemian life, failed love, poetic and tragic outlooks on life and the painful reality check which follows romantic, idealised world views. Daniel Brühl is a legend as always. Can he ever do anything wrong?
