In 1942 in the Bronx, Evelyn Kurnitz has just passed away following a lengthy illness. Her husband, Eddie Kurnitz, needs to take a job as a traveling salesman to pay off the medical bills incurred, and decides to ask his stern and straight talking mother, from who he is slightly estranged, if his two early-teen sons, Jay and Arty (who their Grandma call by their full given names, Yakob and Arthur), can live with her and their Aunt Bella Kurnitz in Yonkers. She reluctantly agrees after a threat by Bella. Despite their Grandma owning and operating a candy store, Jay and Arty don't like their new living situation as they're afraid of their Grandma, and find it difficult to relate to their crazy Aunt Bella, whose slow mental state is manifested by perpetual excitability and a short attention span, which outwardly comes across as a childlike demeanor. Into their collective lives returns one of Eddie and Bella's other siblings, Louie Kurnitz, a henchman for some gangsters. He is hiding out from Hollywood Harry, who wants what Louie stole and is hiding in his small black bag. Jay and Arty's mission becomes how to make money fast so that they can help their father and move back in together, that money which may entail stealing the $15,000 their Grandma has hidden somewhere. Bella's mission is to find a way to tell the family that she wants to get married to Johnny, her equally slow movie theater usher boyfriend, the two who could also use $5,000 of her mother's money to open their dream restaurant. And Louie's mission is to survive the next couple of days.

Ozus' World Movie ReviewsDennis SchwartzThe pic seems too calculating and doesn't have the same stunning effect as the play.
Kansas City StarShawn BowersA good example of fleshing out a single set play into a film would be Steel Magnolias...Yonkers just doesn't pull it off.
Deseret News (Salt Lake City)Chris HicksIt's an enjoyable picture, well-cast and carefully 'opened up' from its stage roots.
User ReviewLynne KI loved this...northeastern accents, the whole bit...hilarious!
User ReviewHannah MI've seen this movie so many times growing up that I can recite it from memory. I've seen the play 3 times and this movie is still the BEST interpretation by far!
User ReviewNicole ZTonight I was watching "Lost in Yonkers." Now I have seen it two other times before and it made me wonder why it was not part of my video library. I think too often certain movies and actors do not get the just credit that they deserve. If you don't know the story I will try to sum it up as briefly as possible. Two boys, Jay and Artie lose their mother. Their father, Eddie had borrowed some money from a loan shark to pay for her medical bills and funeral. It was at war time, so he needed to make 9,000 dollars in a years time. In order to do so he had to go around the country sellin' scrap metal, but couldn't take the boys with. They convince Eddie's mother, who is pure evil, to let the boys stay with her. It is a funny yet touching story about the time they spend with their wicked old witch grandma and the cast of colorful relatives that pop in and out of the film. The person that I feel deserves the biggest kudos is Mercedes Ruehl, who played Aunt Bella. She is sweet, but not all there. She gets confused, but you just love her. She also is taken advantage of my her mother and is tired of it. She is luminous in this role and had me in tears several times. I just think that acting is something you get or don't get and Mercedes gets it. She makes you love her by her kindness and generosity and her "moxy" to stand up to her tyrant of a mother who seems to only care about herself. The actors that play Jay and Artie are great too. They have to do there best to stay out of grandma's hair and want to help their dad make some money too. I just like the movie overall. If you haven't see it I suggest you rent it. I am now gonna buy it. Watching it again made me realize just how much I enjoyed this movie. Thanks for your time in reading, Nikki

User ReviewKevin VThis is a relatively unkown movie but has been a favorite of mine for years. The acting by the woman who plays Bella and the grandmother are incredible and its a great plot. If you are looking for a quality movie this one has lots of humor mixed in with a good deal of drama, especially the confrontation scene where Bella asks her family permission to get married. Great movie, give it a shot and I bet you will enjoy it.
