The New York TimesNeil GenzlingerA slight movie that could have been significantly better with a little story doctoring.
Village VoiceSam WeisbergLive at the Foxes Den's heart is certainly in the right place, but its content is culled from so many different movies that it seems the end product of a particularly unfocused pitch meeting.
Los Angeles TimesMartin TsaiLive at the Foxes Den comes off like some long-unproduced Broadway musical finally dusted off when someone raised enough money to mount it as a film production instead.
VarietyBill EdelsteinThe pacing is tortured. Plot doesn’t so much twist as rupture and spill forth, and character arcs, as if part of a case being built by a cut-rate lawyer, frequently skip discovery and are forgotten before summation.
User ReviewRussell PJust saw "Live at the Foxes Den" this evening. What a refreshing film. Great actors - music and very entertaining. If you want to see a film that hasn't been made in years that you can just sit back and enjoy - this one is for you. I wish more film makers would do more films like this. I would will tell everyone I know to go and see it - YOU WILL ENJOY EVERY MINUTE.
| User ReviewRanda H. CI just saw this movie over the weekend and loved it. If you enjoy outstanding piano and singing, this movie is for you. The storyline kept my interest throughout with some unexpected twists. The broad spectrum of personalities were well suited by the actors and actresses. What a pleasure to see a movie without what seems to be the token violence included. If you are unable to get to a theater I noticed that this movie is also available through video on demand. | User ReviewJames C"Live at the Foxes Den" is a stunningly good movie. A story of the age-old dilemma between having a "job" and chucking it all to follow your passions - with a twist in the outcome. First-time prodigy Director Michael Kristoff has delivered a mesmerizing film with a great story, where each major character has a back story. Jackson Rathbone is charismatic and sings with passion as he navigates between his corporate legal job and his talent for old time, Sinatra-like songs in a bar - better characterized as a "lounge" - by its charming bartender running a place that had seen its better days 'til Rathbone - as Bobby Kelly - shows up. Elliot Gould plays a version of himself, with another plot twist. The film mesmerized me such that at one point after a set of songs, I found myself clapping out loud, before I realized that the applause was coming from within the movie. I found myself laughing and crying. The story is written by Kristoff and one of the leads - who plays the pianist and brilliantly acts out a lot of tragedy in his life via arrested emotional development, humor and pathos. The movie is beautifully filmed and with some of humor morphs into Woody Allen-like effect. Go see "Live at the Foxes Den" and be an early buyer of Director Michael Kristoff's career "stock" that will soon take off. |
