NewsweekDavid AnsenThe movie is lively but half-baked: it dribbles away its promising subject. Some Christmas feast this has turned out to be: it's like munching on leftovers.
Journal and Courier (Lafayette, IN)Bob BloomAn underrated drama, highlighted by Martin's flamboyant performance.
Advocate (Baton Rouge, LA)John WirtComic Steve Martin gives an underappreciated dramatic performance as a phony preacher man. Among his best work.
User ReviewMissy MSteve Martin is great in this movie....so funny
User ReviewDebz ENot as funny as some of his others but its good
User ReviewLeigh-Anne DI am a big fan of Mr. Steve Martin and Liam Neeson. I think the story is an interesting one - not so much for the story but for the telling and characters - humorous, insightful and surprisingly thought-provoking for a comedy.
User ReviewHugo FPack up the babies and grab the old ladies. Don't think this film can be claimed to support or discount blind faith either way. Instead it simply looks at a complex of spirituality in quite a unique, heartfelt and humanistic way. I think Martin is a master of impersonation and he parodies tent and roadside evangelism with fervor unmatched, but his character is one that is highly spiritual as all theatrical endeavors are. Another important element to this film is that it maintains that people who are lead along or coned into this kind of worship are not all bad, many have integrity and honesty. That is important, but it is also important to appreciate the distorted caricature of christianity being portrayed here and so I think in the end it does a good job just having fun with religion and a snippet of American culture. Even if it is not that elaborated. God I love Steve. Look at the suit of God he is wearing! Ha ha ha!
User ReviewSeth MI wish people like Benny Hinn, Ernest Angely, Mike Murdock, Joel Osteen, Richard Roberts, anybody desperate enough to appear on Trinity Broadcasting Network, and Pat Robertson would watch this movie.
User ReviewMichael KSteve Martin plays a faux preacher who preaches the word of god across the country while keeping the donations given by the people. Also stars Debra Winger, Liam Neeson and Meat Loaf.
User ReviewAlex DOne of Steve Martin's best performances!
