User ReviewJames MLane 1974 is the must see coming of age film of the decade. This is an impressive and authentic piece of art with a fresh look at the coming of age film genre. As a period piece, Director SJ Chiro does a fantastic job visually capturing the counter culture movement and the nixon-era. SJ Chiro's authentic tapestry of characters, landscape, sound and music propels this movie into a space I have not experienced within American cinema for a long time. It's fresh, thought provoking and a genuine masterpiece - it's genius!
User ReviewDawn MLane 1974 is a film about the emotional toll of the sexual revolution, a story filtered through the perspective of Lane, a soulful, watchful pre-pubescent girl. Its gorgeous cinematography, the exquisite, subtle acting of its lead, and its restrained dialogue that expertly renders the "mundane" everyday, all work to support the film's dominate note - the pathos of the unsaid. The film's unusual quietness and leisurely pace expose the betrayals of a cultural revolution and its promises of freedom. This is a world in which hypocrisies abound, in which ostensible pleasures appear as anger and indifference. While the adults in her world embody authoritarianism in another guise, practicing various forms of neglect, Lane and her friends console themselves with daydreams of a more stable future. But conflicts among the parents threaten the sustaining solidarity of the children. Lane 1974 shows us that to be utterly "free" is to be abandoned and alone, a pointed reminder of dangers in our own historical moment, in which freedom from regulations, still pushed by the Republicans, could make us free - to perish.
User ReviewStefano CStunning scenery and cinematography pair with a moving script in this bittersweet coming of age movie. Truly fantastic!
User Reviewkari SNot quite as good as I was expecting, but a decent way to spend 90 minutes :)
User ReviewAubrey AThis movie has absolutely no substance...at all! The actors were fine but really, the writer, director and producer have clearly surrounded themselves with people who aren't telling them the truth about their writing, directing or the stories that need to be produced. This shouldn't be called a story, we have no idea why, who, where.... all of the most important things when telling a story. The filming was beautiful and the casting was good but all of it were completely wasted on this story. We turned it off halfway and it was on Hulu for free.
