Bent on finding their anonymous father, a mythical figure tarnished by uncertainty, innocent eleven-year-old Voula and her wide-eyed five-year-old brother Alexandros summon up the courage to run away from home. As the inexperienced companions embark on a long, peril-laden quest to reunite with the long-lost parent in far-off Germany--against the backdrop of bustling railway stations and the grey, rain-soaked winter landscapes of the harsh Greek province--the face of reality, sometimes heart-warming and sometimes utterly appalling, begins to take shape. Now, on their way to the Promised Land, friendly Orestis seems eager to lend a helping hand and offer shelter; however, can the siblings trust him? But the unprotected travellers are running out of luck and hope. Is this journey to the unknown nothing but a wild goose chase?

Movie Reviews

Chicago Reader - 9/10 by Jonathan RosenbaumThere are some visually striking and dramatically effective moments in this film about two children who leave home for Germany in search of their father, but the 126 minutes seemed to last forever.
Deseret News (Salt Lake City) - 9/10 by Chris HicksThere are rich rewards here, and the patient moviegoer looking more for art than plot will feel rewarded.
New York Times - 6/10 by Stephen HoldenThere are sights in the film that once seen cannot be forgotten.
Austin Chronicle - 5/10 by Steve DavisYou appreciate its artistry, but it's a dispassionate appreciation.
User Review - 10/10 by Sophia II don't understand why people have to make films that cause you such excruciating pain. A sore masterpiece.
User Review - 10/10 by Ara Aso beautiful, so soft and intense, an amazing movie
User Review - 10/10 by Sophista FAfter so many years, I still cannot forget this movie. It left such a deep impression and intense sadness that brings out the flavour of the film.
User Review - 10/10 by Leil Zahra MSadness and solitude. Can't spread any optimistic message if one erases the finale which is a huge diversion from most Angelopoulos' films. The little girl is a blast as with the visual silence of a film like that.
User Review - 10/10 by Nishlank JTalk about losing your moorings... When Orestes declares that he and the children are living out "what theater people call an epilogue" towards the end of the film, he's about an hour and a half too late. From the early moment when Voula and Alexander's Uncle strips the audience of the children's idealism, 'Landscape in the Mist' becomes one big, distended tragedy of an afterword. And for the surrealistic humor that occasionally softens the tone, nothing really can mitigate the pain of the moment when Voula realizes the true price of a train ticket. This movie overflows with feeling, intelligence, and lyricism. A masterpiece.
User Review - 10/10 by Y'ng YThe Angelopoulos treatment of abstract themes is carried out with an epic grandeur yet touching on a human level. Two children on a futile journey in search of their lost father who may not have existed in distant Germany which may also have been a fictional detail. Amidst the dreary depressive landscape traversed, there are some magnificent moments of a huge sculpted hand being airlifted from the waters followed by a quote from Rilke, to mention the crudest, as my words fail to accurately capture the subtle power of many other scenes.
