QuickflixSimon MiraudoApologies to Samson and Delilah, Mary and Max and Balibo: the one true great Australian film of 2009 was easily Joel Anderson's Lake Mungo, a mournful, dreamlike examination of the hole left in the heart of a family after a death.
MovieTime, ABC Radio NationalJulie RiggIt's actually very nicely done, using untrained actors and the documentary form disconcertingly well to destabilise audience expectations at a number of points. Is there a ghost story? Why is the family so rattled? What's happening?
FEARnetScott WeinbergAn after-the-fact faux-documentary about the death of a young girl -- and the creepy little hints she may have left behind.
Eye for FilmAmber WilkinsonAnderson's use of the documentary framework is an inspired choice, since it lends what we're seeing an air of reality that helps build the tension to jangling point.
Projected FiguresAnton Bitela sophisticated, adult tale that blends complex, compelling emotions with reflexive commentary on film as a 'medium' of memory, manipulation and magic... a classic supernatural enigma, once seen never forgotten.
Seanax.comSean AxmakerIt's not so much scary as spooky (except for one really creepy moment) but this ghost story is less about supernatural hauntings than human secrets and lies.
User ReviewKrys LA marvelous accomplishment for a 'horror' film because it does what it set out to without once resorting to the clichà (C) antics usually employed by the genre. Using the style of a finely crafted A&E documentary, this film leaves the viewer genuinely unsettled, perhaps even mildly disturbedâ"if you're the kind of person who enjoys supernatural thrillers. The actors are profoundly convincing and Joel Anderson's tale is told so well that your imagination does almost all of the work, which, in my opinion, is exactly what a great horror film should do. Because nothing is ever quite as spooky as the dark recesses of one's own mind. Loved it.
User ReviewRuby Hlake mungo is scary, suspenseful and feels so real its groundbreaking. This hand held horror film will leave you shaking in utter suspense. scarier than the blair witch project, and with twists that cant be beaten. this is a horror masterpiece and a hidden gem. ( will leave young children terrified, best Australian horror film to date )
User ReviewKyle LShows that there's still lots of life left in found footage, if used properly.
User ReviewJack CAmazingly well done, had me questioning whether or not it actually happened.
