Movie Reviews

Los Angeles Times - 9/10 by Kevin ThomasIt’s not only poignant but also fun and unabashedly entertaining in the way that “The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex” still is. And it does have it all: authentic, sumptuous 16th-Century settings awash with warm Tudor brick, a splendid cast adorned with jewel-encrusted costumes, palace intrigue and, best of all, a pair of star-crossed young lovers who are irresistible.
Washington Post - 8/10 by Rita KempleyThere`s nothing really seriously wrong with the movie, save for the casting of Elwes. Lady Jane simply states and restates its premise, and then it`s over in a predictable manner.
The New York Times - 6/10 by Janet MaslinAt the very least, Lady Jane ought to summon more emotion than it does. But the early part of it is so reserved, and the latter part so incongruously fulsome, that it never manages to draw any deep response - not even when a beheading costs the hapless young Jane her luxuriant, Brooke Shields-like hair.
Washington Post - 6/10 by Paul AttanasioOverall, the movie is cloddishly composed, with awkward zooms and theatrical blocking. This is one of those movies where characters speak in asides to the audience; Nunn has reinvented the proscenium arch.
Spirituality and Practice - 4/10 by Frederic and Mary Ann BrussatAbout the short life of an English scholar, reformer, and religious martyr.
User Review - 10/10 by Anna Si cry so hard everytime i see this. talk about strong convictions...
User Review - 10/10 by Cynthia SSuperb! The history of the English Royals has never ceased to amaze me. The people that were closest to them, and were supposed to be there to support and protect them, were nothing but opportunists. This is the story of how they used two poor young people to get their way. Jane Grey and Guilford Dudley were forced into a marriage, and then used to obtain the throne of England. It was never their choice, and it was totally against their wishes. They were nothing but pawns. Unfortunately, when all went wrong in a very short time, they paid for it with their lives. This has to be one of the most tragic stories that came out of that era, and this movie really did a wonderful job telling it..even if they embellished a little with the romance stuff. If that was true or not, I dont know. But it made me enjoy it even more.
User Review - 10/10 by Lindsey WA wonderful movie accurately protraying the social conditions women faced in historical England by making a statement about Lady Janes faith in God. Her faith in God mirrors how we ought to have faith in God with a pure heart and soul.
User Review - 10/10 by Samantha NThis was a really good movie! It really captured the time period and Helena Bonham Carter and Cary Elwes were great!
User Review - 10/10 by Kerry DThis is an amazingly romantic film. It is such a tear-jerker. Yes, the romance is historically inaccurate, but it makes such a beautiful and tragic story. Helena Bonham Carter is absolutely wonderful playing such a softly-spoken, sweet and timid yet headstrong character. Her character in this film has become my role model! She's absolutely divine.
