Classic Film and TelevisionMichael E. GrostOne of Capra's best-loved films, with endearing characters and viewpoint.
Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC)Ken HankeA film where even scenes of abject poverty shimmer with an almost luminous quality. Capra's camera is fluid and precise in its moves.
Combustible CelluloidJeffrey M. AndersonCapra spreads his usual feel-good schmaltz over the otherwise springy material.
User ReviewSamantha SI loved this movie. It was beautiful to see how touched she was when everyone pulled together to help her.
User ReviewMarlaA heart-warming story about a woman who sacrifices everything to send her daughter to Spain. During this time she leads her daughter to believe she is a big mover and shaker in New York City when in actuallity she sells apples in the streets of New York. Lets just say things take a comedic, Capraesque turn of events. A satisfying film. Capra remade this film in 1961 with Bette Davis in the Lead. While I think the remake is very good, I much prefer the original.
User ReviewChristianne LI saw this film about 10 years ago and found it compelling and moving, It has everything ,A criminal who always buys apples from a street seller, takes pity on her ,when one day he finds her her distressed and so a story unfolds, This is a great story and will sadden the hardest of hearts, Dont miss it
User ReviewAmanda GThere are some gaps in the plot but nevertheless worth a good laugh.
User ReviewPrivate UThe probability that a group of beggars and mobsters would go to any length of trouble to help out an alcoholic apple vender who told her daughter that she was a society dame? Very low. But save for a few syrupy sweet speeches rallying around Apple Annie (I think someone actually says "We've got to do this for Apple Annie!" at one point), this movie actually...kind of...works. Maybe because it's got that Frank Capra sincerity, maybe because it's got a good cast (Guy Kibbee and May Robson are cute together). It's far from being the greatest Capra film out there, but it's watchable, maybe even entertaining.
User ReviewBrian HA charming and sweet early film from Frank Capra - and a foreshadowing of stuff to come. The plot gets a little shaky towards the middle. I was surprised they focused in on the police and gangster hostilities rather than the farcical aspects of the scheme. But ultimately both storylines played out fully and came together. May Robson is delightful and precious as Apple Annie, who is so likable that all her friends (and ultimately the entire city of New York) come to her rescue to save her daughter from knowing the truth. There were some genuine laugh out loud moments and lots of interesting character acting. I highly recommend this little gem of a classic.
User ReviewJeff BA great early Capra film with a wonderful set up involving a poor woman who lies to her daughter who lives overseas and has never seen her that she's a rich woman. When the daughter decides to get married and come to visit, "Apple Annie" gets the help of the mobster she bring luck to to turn her into a rich lady for a week. There are some pretty hilarious moments throughout, all involving the mobsters and their reactions to helping out with the crazy idea. Great cast and some perfect writing, especially all of the wonderful names of characters. A great Capra film to see, I loved it, and the ending is so great.
