Video-Reviewmaster.comSteve CrumFun & gay, literally, based on hit Broadway show.
Movie MetropolisJohn J. PuccioThe plot is really quite simple and the finale hilarious, true, but it's in the sincerity of the two primary characterizations that the movie succeeds.
CineVueChristopher MachellThis adaptation of Jean Poiret's play is as moving as it is hilarious in its depiction of moral hypocrisy and familial love.
Creative LoafingMatt BrunsonCharming and frothy, the movie proves to be about as tame as any old-fashioned bedroom farce, which of course went a long way toward allowing it to be embraced by Americans who generally steered clear of foreign films, gay films, and gay foreign films.
Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC)Ken HankeHow The Birdcage ought to be done and first was done.
Movie MetropolisChristopher LongRenato and Albin shared the same hopes and fears as heterosexual parents and (were) both willing to sacrifice anything for the sake of their child.
The DissolveKeith PhippsAs an artifact, La Cage Aux Folles remains fascinating. As a film... Well, it plays like a fascinating artifact. Though pokily staged up to its final act, it manages some real laughs.
User ReviewByron BHilarious, i never laughed so much for this comedy! MIchel Serrault it was a really great interpreter.
User ReviewRuss CMy first introduction to this was of course, the Jerry Herman musical and the American remake, "The Birdcage," but this French version is by far the best. If you can find it dubbed into english, note that the two leads are dubbed by Dick Latessa (from the Broadway cast of "Hairspray") and Victor Garber ("Sweeney Todd," Titanic," "Alias"). Very funny, only dated enough to be slightly quaint.
User ReviewFrank LIt is the funniest movie I seen it just shows that French Films are great. This is the most successful Foreign language films of all time
