But I most appreciated that they spliced in footage from the camera Charlie kept obstructing, so that we witness the incident from both objective and subjective positions. Nothing alerts us to this clever bit of editing, but it works extremely well at helping us identify with Lehrman's cameraman character.

Ce film de Henry Lehrman est le premier dans lequel Charles Chaplin, de son vrai nom, apparaît à l'écran vêtu de son fameux costume. Un Chaplin pour le meilleur, mais surtout le pire! Pendant une course de voiture se déroulant à Venice, Charlie vient embêter les spectateurs, le caméraman et les conducteurs en interférant continuellement la course. Ce n'est qu'une question de temps avant que ceux-ci se frustrent. Ne durant qu'environ une dizaine de minute, il est difficile de juger correctement ce film et d'en faire une analyse complète. Par contre, je peux quand même affirmer que Kid Auto Races At Venice possède plusieurs défauts. J'adore Chaplin, mais presque seulement dans son personnage du Tramp (c'est-à-dire dans ses films un peu plus récent que celui-ci). En faite, ce court-métrage tourne en rond. C'est le problème de la majorité des premiers films de cet acteur! Le gag nous décroche un sourire forcé la première fois, peut-être même la deuxième fois, mais pas la troisième. C'est décevant, puisqu'il y aurait eu quelque chose d'intéressant à faire avec un scénario comme celui-là (bien que très pauvre). J'avoue cependant ne pas considérer Kid Auto Races At Venice comme un film ordinaire. Non pas parce qu'il est possible de compter son nombre de minutes sur nos mains, mais tout simplement parce qu'il se différencie de la norme. Henry Lehrman nous introduit dans la vision du caméraman qui filme la course. C'est un concept que je trouve bien. Par contre, j'aurais préféré que le réalisateur, également scénariste, s'en tienne à sa première idée. Effectivement, Lehrman voulait que son film mette en vedette deux caméramans. Avec l'utilisation du deuxième, nous aurions pu sortir de la vision du premier caméraman et l'introduire dans l'histoire. Ça aurait laissé place à du nouveau au lieu d'être aussi répétitif! De plus, la qualité de l'image n'est pas vraiment bonne. Mais il faut bien s'en attendre, puisque le film date des années 10! Les caméras n'étaient pas aussi performantes à cette époque, on s'entend! Sans mentionner qu'il est fort probable que la pellicule se soit abîmée avec le temps. Pour ces raisons, je ne peux juger ce court-métrage par sa qualité visuelle. Kid Auto Races At Venice marque tout de même involontairement un point. Je dis involontairement, puisque Henry Lehrman ne devait pas penser à ce qu'aurait l'air son film un siècle plus tard, mais il est fort intéressant de regarder les voitures de cette époque. Effectivement, c'est probablement l'aspect qui m'a le plus amusé après avoir revu la même blague quatre ou cinq fois! En conclusion, bien que Charlie Chaplin enfile son merveilleux costume tel que nous le reconnaissons aujourd'hui, Kid Auto Races At Venice n'est pas plus comique pour autant. Se contentant de nous offrir le même spectacle inutilement trop répétitif, Henry Lehrman réussit à nous perdre malgré la bien courte durée de son métrage! C'est tout de même un départ pour Chaplin: bon ou mauvais, tout à un commencement!
User Review - 2/10 by Danny HJust a home movie really. Seems more like experimenting with cameras and a "race" setting and trying to find something that works from an entertainment point of view -- didn't find anything entertaining. Interesting to see Venice in 1914 though.
