It's the morning after John and Mary's first sexual encounter with each other, which took place in his New York City loft apartment. They had only met for the first time the previous evening at a crowded trendy pick-up bar. They are both uncomfortable with the situation but don't want to show that discomfort to the other. They both realize that they don't know anything substantial about the other - including not even knowing each other's name - as each tries through whatever secret means to find out with who he/she just slept. As they slowly find out more about the other, they inject their own perception into the information, which is sometimes not quite reality. Over the next few hours, they, together and individually, will try to determine if there is any potential future for them, which includes their thoughts about the current most significant other in their respective lives, one who is more significant than the other, and their feelings about what they think the other person is thinking about their future.

Chicago Sun-TimesRoger EbertJohn and Mary is supposed to be a contemporary movie, I guess, and yet it's curiously out of touch.
VarietyVariety StaffThe entire charade is smoothly contrived.
The SpectatorPenelope HoustonAlthough John Mortimer's script takes a slightly lazy path, mixing up trendy fantasy and trendy fact as though it's no longer worth the trouble of distinguishing them, his dialogue seems to come easily.

User ReviewMichael DI caught this movie on the Fox movie channel late tonight. I absolutely loved it. It's full of smart dialogue and innovative (even for today) story movement. Dustin Hoffman is at his late-1960s cutest and Mia Farrow is charming. A really nice and realistic romance about 2 people unsure and a bit scared and bruised, but hopeful and willing to try. Man - if only one night stands were really this lovely - who wouldn't want to have a day like this? I would love to see this film remade (most of the dialogue could remain, actually). I'm thinking Keri Russell in Mia Farrow's role . . . but I'm always thinking Keri Russell . . .
User ReviewChase Moh man! this was fabulous. very slow-paced but i loved it. perfect acting. great writing. so simple but really wonderful. I just really loved this movie! Mia Farrow is so charming. Really, really awesome performances. The only problem I had with this movie was the song at the very end. like, WTF. it sounded like the end to a murder mystery movie. hahaha. the ending was great besides that, though.
User ReviewAly HInteresting premise, although quite 'riske' for the time it was released. I felt it gave quite an insight as to what we are thinking to ourselves, especially when we analyze the opposite sex...also I loved how both compared each other to their exes. Although we try not to do it, we always end up doing so whether we'd like to or not. Awesome Flick! I definitely recommend seeing it!
User ReviewPaul LA good rainy day flick...not too thoughtful, but genuine.
User ReviewLindsay BMia Farrow, is the cutest, reddest and pixiest love ever. Dustin Hoffman, well not as good as The Graduate, but nice. I enjoyed how they let you in on their thoughts.
User ReviewVladimir KWonderful, nice, tender movie about volatile relationships between man and woman. And there couldn't be better actors there: Dustin Hoffman and Mia Farrow are marvelous. But I somehow always have a feeling it's a Woody Allen's movie :-) No, it's not.
