Willamette WeekNathan CarsonUsing color Super 8 footage from Jaco's early life and funding from Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo to great effect, Jaco spares no expense in telling the tragic story of this incredible musician.
User ReviewCharlie HI love it when i discover something or someone in a field i have a big passion for that i never knew of prior. Such is the case of Jaco Pastorius, a incredibe, talented bassist who created and played a style of music way ahead of its time. Coincidently he was a huge influence on other bassists such as Flea, Geddy Lee, Robert Trujillo, and Sting. Jaco is a documentary produced by Trujillo and gives you a snapshot of Jaco's beginnings to his untimely yet eeriely prophetic death at the tender age of 35. Its amazing not only what he did with his solo work but what he was able to do with various other projects including Joni Mitchell, Brian Melvin, Ian Hunter, and Pat Metheny. Combining a mixture of jazz, rock, and fusion he was able to create some fantastic progressive styled bass lines and arrangements in his catalog. Some of his best work appears with that band project Weather Report. The sadness of Jaco's life is the inner demons he battled in his life and reminds us just how serious mental illness should be taken when we look at some of the social issues that we face in society right now. Great documentary and i would recommend it to anyone who is a music fan in general.
User ReviewBrady SIncredible documentary on the best bass player ever in our lifetime!
User ReviewJay MA true labour of love for Trujillo, Jaco is a deserving tribute to the world's greatest and most influential bass player.
User ReviewSamy AProduced by Metallica bassist, and Pastorius fan Robert Trujillo, bringing together musicians such as Flea, Joni Mitchell, Sting, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Carlos Santana, Lenny White and many others, this movie is an enlightening introduction to the genius of Pastorius. If you play bass (or any other instruments for that matter) this guy just lets the music flow through him. I regret the lack of immersion in the creative process of Jaco though. 4*
User ReviewCarson GI'm so glad to finally see this film, which seems to have taken years to become a reality. It gives some good insight into who Jaco was as a person and as a musician. Jaco was a genius who burned brightly and wildly and changed both jazz fusion and the electric bass forever.
