Full Plot Details

Renowned stage actors Basil Underwood and Joyce Arden are partners on and off the stage. An occupational hazard for Basil is that women often fall in love with what they see of him on the stage, he who sometimes indulges that adoration. Basil and Joyce's personal life is passionate and tempestuous characterized by constant fighting and making up, which is often continued on-stage under their breaths. After their latest fight and reconciliation, they decide to get married... for the twelfth time. They are determined to make it to the altar this time. But Basil feels he needs to wipe clean the slate first by doing a favor for a stranger, Henry Grant, whose fiancée has fallen in love with him. With his latest script in hand, Basil vows to make Henry's fiancée fall out of love with him by playing the cad. He finds that it may be more difficult than he first imagined when he finds out that the woman in question is Marcia West, the young woman who professed her love to him earlier in the evening and whose fawning he was thinking about indulging. As Basil is at the West mansion thinking if he should play this latest role as cad or romantic leading man, Digges, Basil's faithful dresser who is along for the ride, thinks that there is a missing female role in this play, one that would be played perfectly by Joyce. When Joyce arrives on the scene, the question becomes what is acting and what is real life.

User Review - 10/10 by Lisa MI love it when established dramatic actors dish up a comedy, and score big. "It's Love I'm After" delivers big in every aspect: the cast, the script, and the all-important timing. Leslie Howard is the world-class ham Shakespearean actor Basil Underwood who, after living fast and loose and leaving "rather a bad odor", determines to do a good turn for once in his life. Bette Davis is his not-so-long-suffering love with a volcano temper and mile-wide jealous streak. When Patric Knowles asks Basil to make his fiancee, Olivia deHavilland, fall out of love with the actor, all manner of mayhem ensues. The script is tight, the acting, especially the character acting, is superb. Watch Eric Blore as the butler Diggs upstage alll the heavyweights around him--hilarious stuff!

Both Howard/DeHavilland and Howard/Davis are among the best screen pairings of all time, so it's great to have both on screen. And the dialog is amazing. "You don't suppose we've awoken her 'slap me again, I love it' complex?"

User Review - 6/10 by Orlok WA terribly old romantic-comedy story played out beautifully in this 1937 film. I have always found Miss Davis a bit hard on the eyes in later years. (character makeup, aging etc.) but she in nothing less that absolutely stunning in this film. Olivia De Havilland is equally stunning in the first of 4 movie parings of these film icons. Olivia De Havilland's character "Marcia" falls head over heels in love with actor Basil Underwood, overplayed by Leslie Howard. Basil is engaged to fellow actress Joyce Arden play by Davis. It's a romantic farce that is quite fun to watch. Eric Biore steals many scenes as Digges, Basil's butler. Fun movie to watch.
