User ReviewCatriona TFascinating documentary from which I learned a lot about a topic I was very ignorant about. I did feel it sugar-coated the prevalence of Islamic extremists and the role of women, because it only interviewed very reasonable and moderate Muslims. However, it would be great if all American high school students could watch this and find out more about one of the world's great cultural traditions.
User ReviewTrinity CThis is a great documentary to teach about this religion. It got a little too heavy on the history of the politics of the religion and it barely focused on the Sunni/Shiite ideologies. But a great way to learn about a world religion.
User ReviewPrivate UIt could be worse! Really! Produced in 2002, and it shows! Save yourself a lot of time and just go to a website that explains the Five Pillars. If you want more, there are books on Islamic history that will explain the dynasties, European colonialism, etc. I wasl particularly galled at the end of the piece when terrorism and suicide bombing were tightly linked to Islam. That suicide bombing might have nationalist, not religious, motivations, (the world champions at suicide bombing are the secular but Hindi-heritage Tamils) or that nominal Christians could potentially, say, kill tens of thousands of innocent Muslims and others by invading a middle-eastern nation that posed to it no threat, well, that doesn't rate a mention. Nor does the continual colonization of the Occupied Territories by Israel, itself a nationalist impulse that might induce a nationalist response. Recommended solely to those who know absolutely nothing about Islam and European and American colonialism. Your public library beckons. Try, "The Looming Tower" audiobook, if you want something entertaining and informative. It goes to great lengths to explain how only a twisting of Islamic theology would permit mass murder.
