Full Plot Details

The Ik were described as sadists who starved their own children and crapped in front of each others' homes for fun. They were reviled as the worst and most depraved beings on Earth, and it was recommended that their culture be destroyed for its own good. No one has dared to film them in the 40 years since they were first studied. Ikland recounts a quest to re-connect with a lost corner of humanity. For director Cevin Soling, they represented the last outpost of imagination in a world devoid of myth. He risked his life, and the lives of his crew, by traveling through war-ravaged northern Uganda to reach them. Their experience was alien and surreal in ways only Jonathan Swift might have imagined.

Movie Reviews

Monsters and Critics - 7/10 by Ron WilkinsonA remarkable work of indie craftsmanship. The forgotten people who point the way to the forgotten side of the Western world.
The New York Times - 7/10 by Jeannette CatsoulisNarrating as he goes, his humor as warm and dry as the ground beneath his feet, Mr. Soling is an unconventional explorer whose interactions with the long-suffering Ik - the women quiet and watchful, the men seamed and talkative - are politely deferential. He's clearly not there to engage in scientific study; he's simply reaching out across continents on a hunch that even eminent scientists can get it wrong.
rec.arts.movies.reviews - 6/10 by Louis ProyectA work of enormous humanity and a reminder that anthropology textbooks are often more a study of the author's savagery than those under his microscope.
Variety - 6/10 by Ronnie ScheibThough generally engrossing, Ikland's multiscreen displays and cross-cultural theatrical experiments prove more distracting than effective.
Village Voice - 5/10 by Nick SchagerSoling and co-director David Hilbert divide their screen into multiple visual quadrants, an aesthetic strategy that soon becomes a wearisome affectation that's barely mitigated by their refusal to romanticize the landscape or soft-pedal the hazardous hardships of Ik life.
