User Review - 10/10 by Megan PI concur entirely with Miss Gory. The lack of recognition for Mr Walker's work is nothing short of shameful as well as deeply sad. Produced in that particular period when the British film industry was entering its definitive death rattle, House of Whipcord sees Pete Walker employing the outlook and techniques of the most subversive US exploitation auteur and the result is both astutely relevant to its time and amazingly fresh even today. Encompassing themes of puritan morality and draconian punishment, this film wryly reflects the rise of reactionary political power which was beginning to seize Britain before its eventual apex in the guise of Thatcherism. The fact that several of Walker's films were later blacklisted in the infamous video nasty bill a few years later was a delicous irony which I'm sure was hugely appreciated by the man himself. With a stark and bleak tone, some stunning photography, and a gallery of engaging performances (not least the inimitable Sheila Keith's glowering guard), House of Whipcord stands as both a genre milestone and a remarkably adept piece of filmmaking by any concievable standard.
User Review - 8/10 by Miss.Gory RONLY eight fans? How can this be? This is a classic Pete Walker film, and we see Sheila Keith doing what she does best...thats right, being a very frightening lady...I am truly shocked that this film has not recieved the attention I was under the impression it had.
User Review - 8/10 by Tristan PArguably the least of Pete Walker's three classic horror films (the other two being FRIGHTMARE and SCHIZO) this is paradoxically the best written and directed of the three, but it replaces the brutality of the other two with a twisted gallows humour. I've heard the humour in the film described as "Pythonesque", but nobody would call it that if this were an American film. It's a dark, smart British horror film, highly recommended.
User Review - 8/10 by Ian Ja great cult british movie, made in my hometown of the Forest Of Dean! i live 10 mins from the great house!!! this and Frightmare show Pete Walker as a under cherished horror icon, the same goes for Shelia Keith. see this movie......
User Review - 8/10 by Stuart KProduced and directed by Pete Walker, who did a lot of naughty horror films in the 1970's, mainly ones with more sex than scares, he turned out this really nasty and disturbing one. But it's a social commentary on the rise of moral guardians like Mary Whitehouse, and it shows what could happen if people like her got their way. It makes for uncomfortable viewing. It begins when model Anne-Marie Devernay (Penny Irving) meets the mysterious Mark E. Dessart (Robert Tayman) at a party, and they begin a relationship and Mark takes Anne-Marie to meet his parents. But, it turns into a nightmare when it's revealed that Anne-Marie has been thrown into a correctional facility, ran by the elderly and near-senile Justice Bailey (Patrick Barr) and warden Mrs. Wakehurst (Barbara Markham), who run their own prison for those who have escaped justice. There's other girls in there, being tortured by Bates (Dorothy Gordon) and Walker (Sheila Keith). But, it's not long before Anne-Marie's flatmate Julie (Ann Michelle) and her boyfriend Tony (Ray Brooks) are out looking for her, but Anne-Marie manages to escape, but not before Mrs. Wakehurst starts to lose her mind with power. This film is a warning of why moral guardians should never get their way, you could imagine those horrible people doing stuff like this. It's a very nasty film, and director Pete Walker had his fingers on the pulse of moral panics the UK at that time, and he was bang on the money.
User Review - 8/10 by delysid dthis is my favorite pete walker movie, its a paranoid film about a private prison run by psychopaths... there is no escape!
User Review - 8/10 by FilmGrinder SThis is the introduction: X Rated, and then: "This film is dedicated to those who are are disturbed by today's lax moral codes who eagerly await the return of corporol and capital punishment...."...Say whaaaat? Like midieval times, girls are condemned by those who don't follow The Word themselves. Sadists. It's unfunny how life imitates 'art though', as there's a Jeffery Dahmer incident. Over all, this film doesn't earn an X-rating. P.S. To RT: Your sponser of Mexican beer and video games sucks, how much did you make? "Me thinkith the lady doth protest to much"-The Judge (Tony Sympson)
User Review - 6/10 by Trent RVery well made and intelligent political satire that lampoons Tory corporal punishment proponents. The production is superbly staged, with suitably austere locations and minimal but well-placed lighting. The initial female lead sports a truly terrible French accent, but the veteran supporting cast of villains is so strong that it is easy to overlook. Excellent cinematography, with not overly dramatic focus-pulling and intercutting between backlit closeups and low-angle shots.
User Review - 6/10 by Bill BPete Walker really hit his stride for me with my watch of this one, in which a cruel older woman uses her son to lure promiscuous young women to their remote estate, then imprisons them to teach them the error of their ways through a series of torture and punishment. Wild stuff, especially considering the UK and the time frame in which these films were made. Give it a look.
User Review - 6/10 by Paul DChilling British horror which is a take on sadistic vigilantism.
