On the mournful bank of the meandering Canal St. Martin, at the cheap Parisian Hôtel du Nord, the dejected young lovers, Pierre and Renée, take a room, bent on fulfilling an unholy pact. Then, in the dead of night, a nearly fatal gunshot chills the bone to the marrow, splitting the couple, apparently, forever. However--amid a sad but beautiful panorama of streetwise prostitutes; hard-as-nails procurers in impeccable suits; forlorn survivors; murderous former companions, and the police--unfulfilled desires, secret passions, and a dangerous romantic triangle have the final say. Now, in love's name, high expectations for a fresh start and a deadly semi-automatic pistol separate hope from despair. Can life be as easy as a fairy tale?

User ReviewF Clark WThis was a terrific film. Lots of energy and good humor in spite of the fact that it opens with a botched murder-suicide. That, ultimately, is one of the bits of humor even though it is played straight.
User ReviewAnne FA doomed suicide pact set in working-class pre-war Paris. This is a great film by Marcel Carne (apologies for the spelling error - accented Es turn into gibberish) starring Arletty and Louis Jouvet. If poetic realism is your thing you'll love this film.
User ReviewMarc HChef d'oeuvre... Ne serait-ce que pour "l'atmosphère"...
User ReviewPrivate UFrench movie about life and Love. Good drama. Teast of Old France way of life. I love it.
User ReviewLucile Hevery movies with Louis Jouvet isobliged to be a very good movie
A découvrir, à redécouvrir.
User ReviewGenevieve PA very brave film with some challenging ideas, a great story but lacking depth sometimes. The acting is superb really given the era. It captures a lot of futility and the fragility of the human soul, in a way only the French can.
User ReviewGabriel A«Est-ce que j'ai une gueule d'atmosphère!?»
User ReviewJean-Marie LI was in wonder watching this film. I adore the poetic realism movement and Carne' has directed some of my favourite features. Here Arletty and Jouvet shine in their roles, which are brought to life also thanks to a script which seemed to exude wit and romanticism. I loved the star-crossed love story and was very impressed with the set recreation of this spot of Paris. This film had ATMOSPHERE, ATMOSPHERE! :)
User ReviewMichael TCome in the playground ! Jouvet est pénétrant, Arletty gouailleuse, j'adore.
