"But if you forget to come back for Madame Zeroni, you and your family will be cursed for always and eternity." Those were the exact words spoken to young Elya Yelnats the day he forgot to repay Madame Zeroni. From then on his family was cursed with bad luck. One hundred years later Stanley Yelnats IV is accused of stealing a pair of cleats from a major league baseball player and sent to Camp Green Lake (a dry lake bed in the middle of the desert). It never rains at Camp Green Lake, it hasn't for one hundred years. The secretive and mysterious Warden has each inmate spend every day digging one hole to "build character." But when an artifact from the famous "Kissin' Kate" Barlow is found in a hole, the Warden forces the boys to work double time leading Stanley to deduce they're digging because the Warden is looking for something. But what? And how is the mystery of Camp Green Lake connected to Stanley's family curse?

Denver PostClaire MartinThat rare thing, a movie that will genuinely appeal to just about everyone in a family, though it emphatically is not the soppy pap that conventionally passes as a 'family film.'
Killer Movie ReviewsAndrea Chase. . .that best of all pictures made with kids in mind, the kind that they can grow up with, seeing more depths of meaning the older they get. . .

Decent Films GuideSteven D. GreydanusWry humor, thrills, redemption, and a convoluted, almost epic plot that’s fun to unravel.
USA TodayClaudia PuigIt's great to see an action-adventure family film with heart as well as humor, whimsy alongside wisdom, and a compelling narrative.
eFilmCritic.comErik ChildressAdventures, quirkiness, mystery, violence and valuable life lessons are just the things I want youngsters to be reading and Holes is just the kind of movie I want made based on those readings.
Hollywood ReporterKirk HoneycuttThe intention is a good one, but the blending of disparate ingredients under Andrew Davis' direction is often jarring.
The New York TimesDana StevensOne of the few recent movies I have seen that plunged me into that rare, giddy state of pleasurable confusion, of not knowing what would happen next, which I associate with the reading and moviegoing experiences of my own childhood. But there is no reason that children should have a monopoly on this primal, wonderful experience.
