Family Home TheaterJames PlathA tense and satisfying Western. But you do have to check your realistic expectations at the door.
VarietyJoe LeydonLess censorious aficionados likely will be willing to look past the rough edges and enjoy the simple pleasures provided by a respectfully sincere retelling of a familiar legend.
The Hollywood ReporterFrank ScheckThere’s absolutely nothing memorable about the film.... But it boasts plenty of gritty period atmosphere and earns points for its lack of pretension.
Chicago Sun-TimesRichard RoeperHickok is not without its corny, borderline-cheesy moments of fun — but it eventually loses steam due to the increasingly cliché-riddled story developments, not to mention the awkwardly edited shootouts that sometimes make it seem as if the combatants filmed their scenes on separate days.
Los Angeles TimesMichael RechtshaffenFor a film about one of the fastest guns in the West, the dramatically lightweight Hickok is mighty slow on the draw.
User ReviewAngela BI loved to cast & it gave a new twist on an old story/legend!! I would recommend this movie to people who love westerns!!!
User ReviewGordon RI loved it. Great acting with Luke Hemsworth and Kris Kristofferson. Very good Directing and set design.
User ReviewgordonwolosonThis movie has all of my favorite country legends, Kris Kristofferson, Trace Adkins, Bruce Dern, and from my new favorite show West World's Luke Hemsworth. Lots of blazing gun fights, memorable lines, and beautiful scenery of the old west.
User Reviewmwil236An acceptably entertaining production of the familiar Western variety, Hickok will do for fans of the genre who have little interest in history or originality. Applying only a name, time and place to the actual history of Wild Bill Hickok and replacing him with an appreciably hotter man of completely different appearance, Hickok focuses on another actual event from the man's life dramatized by a classic ex-girlfriend debacle. Luke Hemsworth provides an almost Tom Hardy-esque performance as an admittedly gritty and legitimate western threat, but his performance is mired by a cookie-cutter story and predictable tropes of the genre played out in almost insultingly clear exposition on screen. That's not to say that you won't occasionally find yourself impressed with the action sequences or satisfied by the gunslinging, but you'll forget the experience shortly thereafter. Trace Adkins stays in his lane as a supporting villain while Kris Kristofferson is forced to occupy the role of sagely, tired old man who tries to save the young hothead (Hemsworth) from himself, which is a shame. As a Saturday afternoon Netflix indulgence, Hickok has a place in most fans' lives.
User ReviewThomas AAn average Western that includes big stars but not much else. The substance of the plot feels...lacking!
