Movie Reviews

Arkansas Democrat-Gazette - 8/10 by Philip Martin... a messy, blunt movie that manages to push a lot of buttons. Surely one of them does something.
Los Angeles Times - 5/10 by Amy NicholsonWe're not sure what director Michelle Danner, who plays Herman's defensive mother in an uncredited role, wants us to get besides a reminder that angry boys act out for a host of half-defined reasons.
Village Voice - 5/10 by Rob StaegerThe dialogue is all surface: Emotions are laid out on the autopsy table for the audience to dissect and analyze, but rarely feel.
Eye for Film - 4/10 by Jennie KermodeHello Herman suffers not so much from its boldly stated anti-bullying agenda but from its failure to come to any conclusions.
ReelTalk Movie Reviews - 4/10 by Betty Jo TuckerA timely and important movie...I've enjoyed Norman Reedus' excellent work in TV's THE WALKING DEAD, but I think he's even better here.
Time Out - 2/10 by Sam AdamsIt barely tries to offer insight into its much-debated subject, content to rip the scab off an ever-fresh wound for the sake of controversy. The most fitting punishment is to simply ignore its existence.
User Review - 10/10 by Aimee MThe echoes of Newtown, Connecticut are still being heard in the public's collective memory. The recent tragedy has awoken such passionate discourse among people of all viewpoints on issues such as gun control, school protection, mental health, etc. The new Michelle Danner film "Hello Herman," due for a March 2013 release, makes a bold decision in focusing on a viewpoint rarely heard from in the wake of mass shootings- the view from the killer. "Hello Herman" tells the story of Herman Howards (Garrett Backstrom), a young high school student who has committed a bloody marathon of killings with a gun in his high school gym. Right before submitting to police apprehension, he records himself talking directly to media personality Lax Morales (Norman Reedus), saying that he wants to be profiled on his show. Lax retains his distance from Herman throughout the interview process, but it isn't before long that he starts to remember his own savage memories. Lax and Herman soon form a cautious bond that transgresses interviewer and subject. Lax's discovery of Herman's true identity mirrors our own: that of an intelligent, lonely, and tormented youth who was invisible in a sea of other teenage faces. Featuring powerful performances from Reedus and Backstrom, and a fine ensemble cast (notably Danner herself as Herman's mother) "Hello Herman" paints a complex portrait of a school shooter and the external forces that are equally brutal to young people- bullying, neglect, and misunderstanding. This film is relevant and will likely add to the conversation about these trying times.
User Review - 10/10 by Robert MHello Herman may be written 13 years ago, but the topics are still growing subjects in America: gun control and bullying. Herman Howards is a 16-year-old boy who goes to his school one day and does the unimaginable. He emails a famous on-line journalist, Lax Morales, to tell his side of the story. Hello Herman explores the connection of bullying, video games, and school shootings. Throughout the interview, the audience learns that Herman has a past history of being bullied at school, losing his young sister, and living alone as his mother is always away at work. He finds refuge in violent shooting video games and keeping to himself. Lax Morales tries to find the deeper meaning of reason for the shooting while battling his past demons in Georgia. When questions get tough for Herman, he turns the table on Lax by questioning Lax's past and trying to connect his life with Lax's. Lax battles with his past and tries to connect with Herman. The progression of the friendship from the beginning to the end works well and it also creates the progression for the audience with Herman as well. Director Michelle Danner does a great job in directing this film and brings a unique take on the subject matter. Like Kimberly Pierce's Boys Don't Cry, Michelle takes on a social issue and brings it to life for the world to be aware. Her creativity and direction brings the characters to life.
User Review - 10/10 by Cindy H"Hello Herman" is the story of a teen (Garrett Backstrom) telling a blogger (Norman Reedus) and why he committed a horrifying crime. It is very disturbing, but equally so is the public reaction shown via a news segment called Chet Chat, which calls for an equally evil and violent response. The aggressive rhetoric is a painful reminder that society seems to cry for vengeance without stopping to consider the causes of the first destructive outburst. This highly effective and heart-wrenching film is a sobering look at tragedies and the visceral reactions people have to them, as well as how people can be brought to the breaking point to commit such atrocities.
User Review - 10/10 by Mike RReleased in 2011, Michelle Danner's "Hello Herman" film leaves us shocked with the things that are shadowing and happening in the world today. High-schooler Herman Howard faces many struggles and goes through life changing experiences that involve a massacre and leave him in a life or death situation. The movie explores why children his age would even think about gaining power through such a shocking tragedy. The scenes in the film explore the possibilities that could happen if bullying continues to affect children in school.
