User Review - 10/10 by Lindsay Elizabeth Mbrillaint movie. next to tryo, this movie packs a punch, talking about the abduction of helen by paris. but in this movie, the events leading up to the trojan war are explained. there are slight differences to the modern version, like the death of achilles. shortly after he killed hector, paris shot achilles through the heel as he dragged hector's body infront of the trojans. all in all, this is a classic that seems to be ignored.
User Review - 10/10 by arjay bParis, played by Jacques Sernas, was the most gorgeous man I had ever seen and to me, made his character come alive. It is good for the viewer to see this cinemascope spectacular from 1956. Helen of Troy is very pleasingly made and with excellent action and spectacle - especially in the well populated fiery siege scenes. No CGI in those days, there really was a couple of thousand dressed and armed extras running all over the huge set. Rossana Podesta, a natural brunette given a blonde wig and the classical Grecian look - plays Helen, the indirect cause of the Trojan War, but for Paris, she is the goddess of love and beauty, "Aphrodite." it's based on Homer and neither substracts nor adds to his basic plot - except for the Gods, which are mentioned but never seen, which makes it a modern secular version of the Iliad. One of the greatest epics ever made.

User Review - 8/10 by SARAH BThis film is good Steve Reeves type fun. Don't go looking for much more than incredible stunt action served with large portions of beef cake and cheese cake.
User Review - 8/10 by Jamileh Mit's a pretty good interpretation of the book.29 years ago I was convinced Paris and Helen were the most attractive people on the earth
User Review - 8/10 by Ann LLovely old film, which may not actually have launched a 1000 ships, but which first introduced me to the story of The Illiad when I was VERY young and set me off on several explorations of its locations (spured on by Michael Wood's In Search of the Trojan War). It is certainly more fun than being made to read the story in Latin (that dubious pleasure came later!) Given the lack of the amazing CGI recreations of the more recent "Troy", the 1956 film still does an excellent job of re-creating the action and feel of the epic battles. If anything lets it down it is the more intimate scenes, which have a somewhat dated feel. My recomendation is first see 2004's "Troy", and if you enjoy that, go back and check out this fine "original". The recent "Helen of Troy" TV movie isn't bad either.
User Review - 8/10 by Kevin RWhat must be no one can change. Prince Paris is sent to the Greeks in hopes of negotiating a peace treaty between Troy and the Greeks. His ship crashes and he washes onto the Greek shore. He is nurtured by a slave family and the beautiful queen of the Greeks who spends time with the slaves without the King's knowledge. Paris and the queen fall in love and return to Troy together. The Greeks send 1,000 ships to Troy to retrieve the queen and destroy the Trojans. "The gods sometimes crush the bravest of intentions." Robert Wise, director of West Side Story, Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), The Sound of Music, The Andromeda Strain, The Haunting (1963), The Day the Earth Stood Still, Blood on the Moon, The Curse of the Cat People, and The Body Snatcher, delivers Helen of Troy. The storyline for this picture is fairly straightforward but contains fascinating characters and wonderful subplots. The cast delivers solid performances and includes Stanley Baker, Rossana Podesta, BrigitteBardot, and Stanley Baker. "He hates you almost as much as he loves war." My wife and I are huge mythology fans so she DVR'd this picture. The overall film was very good though I thought they could have done more with Achilles, Hector, and Ajax. I always hated Paris in this story and despised that this picture spent so much time focused on him. Nevertheless, this picture was very entertaining and worth following. I recommend giving this picture a shot. "Beware the Greeks bearing gifts." Grade: B+
User Review - 8/10 by Adam DFor what it is, and for its time, this movie is probably groundbreaking. Of course, for those of us horribly spoilt with present day CGI, this movie's a laugh a minute, from the dodgy fight choreography to the obviously wooden swords and the unruffled tunics. But you know what? It was fun to watch, and we really enjoyed it, even though we felt Paris bore a striking resemblance to Lurch from The Addams Family.
User Review - 8/10 by Lee STerrific set-piece battle with thousands of extras and reconstructed war machines. Memorable from my childhood. Good music score was popular at the time.
User Review - 6/10 by Paul DSolid story of the Trojan Wars in typical soundstage telling for the 50's. Good action and melodramatic acting for the obligatory love story around the mass killings sequences.
