Ludiana-based Chand gets married to Brampton-based Rocky Singh Dhillon and re-locates to Canada, to live with him and his extended family, consisting of his mom and dad; brother Baldev and his wife, Aman, and two children, Kabir and Loveleen. From the honeymoon stage itself, Chand gets physically abused by Rocky, and despite of bringing in $20K in dowry, she is immediately hired as a laborer even though she is a graduate and her wages are paid to her husband, and is not even permitted to call back home. Tenants occupy the house during the daytime, and the entire Dhillon family usually stay put in a shopping mall. Things only get worse after Rocky brutally assaults her in everyone's presence after she gets into a physical altercation with her mother-in-law. She manages to call back home wanting to return back, only to face discouragement, as her family want Rocky to sponsor her brother, Gurpreet. Things change dramatically after she claims she spotted Sheshnaag in the backyard, while her husband prepares to accuse her of having an affair with another male.

JWR - 9/10 by S. James Wegg... Deepa Mehta turns her own Punjabi culture inside and out as this tale of arranged marriage moves from ceremonial joy through the willful blindness which spans the generational divide to the employment of myth, magic and fable ...
Toronto Star - 8/10 by Peter HowellA less assured filmmaker would have trouble reconciling reality with magic realism, but writer/director Mehta turns kitchen-sink drama into soaring metaphor.
Jam! Movies - 8/10 by Bruce KirklandI can sense the profound ambition that inspired Deepa Mehta to craft her drama Heaven on Earth. But her uneven film turns out to be deeply troubling.
User Review - 8/10 by Mandeep SIts an eye opener for those hypnotised by foreign lands. It perfectly portrays the reality. the complexity of relations in family of new immigrants is touching. The scenes of violence send shivers down the spine. Definitely not for the weak hearted
User Review - 8/10 by Jams GDeepa Mehta scores a home run yet again.... The movie is about a new bride who moves to canada to be with her husband. New land, new people, she looks to her husband for support and guidance, but receives a huge shock when she becomes the victim of domestic violence instead... Although most of the movie was in Punjabi, it is easy to follow the story and empathize with the girl and what she is going through.
User Review - 8/10 by Sajin PIn this ironically titled kitchen-sink drama, Deepa Mehta tries to uncover the plight of a Punjabi girl, Chand, who gets married abroad to an abusive husband and his unsympathetic family. Her new mother-in-law senses competition for her son's heart, wedging herself between the newly wed couple. While Chand makes desperate attempts to make her marriage work, her world alternately shifts between reality and fantasy, drawing comparisons to some old Indian folklore tales. Whatever her intensions were, Deepa Mehta's critical look at domestic-abuse often looses the plot because of its tiresome and manipulative nature. Never is explained why a seemingly normal 21st century family cant welcome a bride into their home with some minimal compassion. Overall, it turned out to be just a deeply troubling viewing experience with out any real purpose or conclusion. The only reason I'm giving the movie a higher rating is the performance from its lead, Preity Zinta, who turned out to be a real class act. Without her solely carrying the movie on her shoulders, this movie would've turned into a total disaster. Zinta delivers the kind of performance that would've served her better justice in a better movie with a more promising premise.
User Review - 8/10 by Sara CI was amazed by this film. Another great story from Deepa Mehta
User Review - 8/10 by Kristen PHeaven on Earth is another stunning film from filmmaker Deepa Mehta. Tackling yet another taboo topic in society Mehta is able to explore the confusion and weight of a abusive relationship. Sometimes the interrelated story of the Cobra was a little confusing (was that snake actually in the yard? and did she actually put it around her neck?), but still deeply affective.
User Review - 8/10 by Private UZinta's most powerful and empowering performance to date.. highly recommended!!
User Review - 8/10 by Sarita TDeepa Mehta once again provides a thought provoking movie and subject matter. I really think that this is another one to add to the list and its in PUNJABI even better
