Dadasaheb Phalke had abandoned a well established printing business after a quarrel with his business partner. He gave his word to the worried partner that he would never enter into the printing business again as competition! Phalke got instantly unemployed and workless. The family was struggling to survive. One day he accidentally stumbled across a tent theatre that was screening a silent motion picture. He was awestruck with the film. The idea of film making struck him. Along with his hardworking wife and two enthusiastic kids by his side, he ventured into a field unknown to contemporary India. Making of India's first feature film, 'Raja Harishchandra' was an amazing adventure. The Phalke family encountered mostly funny but also a few grave situations during their journey of film making. They were a team of crazy yet lovable people that helped in winning over patrons and eventually money. Together, not only did they deliver the first Indian film, but they had ensured it to become the first super hit film too! In 1914, Phalke refused offers from his English friends to make films in London. His reason for the refusal was - 'I must keep making films in India, so that it gets established as an industry at home'. The rest is history.

User Review - 10/10 by Dinesh KWarm, feel good movie about the father of Indian cinema as he goes about making India's first feature film.
User Review - 8/10 by Amit PTremendously Wonderful... What can you expect from Paresh Mokashi... He is a genius storyteller... A thorough researcher and an artist... Depicts old time 'Bombay' and the 'Bombaykars' very realistically... Humorously showcased the Never Say Die attitude of Phalke and his family... Somewhere I felt that a few wider shots would've done justice in terms of the magnitude of the film... But who cares with afilm that is this great Another thing that delights me is the pure Marathi language that we get to hear through out the film... Tired of those 'ghaati' and 'agri' accent which almost peeps into every marathi film till date... A few memorable scenes are those in which the entire audience is facing the screen but Phalke is sitting the other way facing the projector room watching the projector light... Why didn't Maysabha and UTV use this as a poster pic for marketing??? Another scene when he walks in to the British office and without any consciousness says in a Marathi accent " I am Dhundiraaj Phalke from India, I want to learn to make a motion picture, Can you help?" Simply hilarious... The rehearsals, phalke's actual shoot of the first motion picture of India, everything is just so enjoyable... Hats Off... Doesnt matter if it's out of the Oscar race, this is a movie that we can cherish and show to the generations to come, how a novice became a film maker with his sheer risk taking attitude and a strong belief in himself... Many Indian actors and technicians didn't even knew who Phalke was... Thanks to Paresh and his team they wrote the Chapter One of the history of film-making in India...
User Review - 8/10 by Sankalan SA wonderful comic re-take on the making of India's first feature film...The film is about Dada saheb Phalke's dedication and eccentricity...but it speaks immense volumes about the script-writer and director's dedication to create scenes symbolizing Dadasaheb's dedication...Who could have thought of a simple yet effective renaming of Phalke(Kelpha) when Phalke is showing magic tricks to the children...??? The unassuming 'growth of the pea-plant' beomes such a wonderful film within the film itself...brilliant...to think of such visuals in that time...oh boy...stunning...The entire film is one feel-good journey that will keep u smiling all along...and if u happen to understand Marathi...I guess it will double ur ecstacy...Translations rape...
User Review - 8/10 by Bryon vA very good movie. It is a story about the birth of Indian Cinema. The struggle of Dadasaheb Phalke in making India's first feature film. Must watch.
User Review - 8/10 by Vijay GQuite funny at times, it tells the tale of the Dadasaheb Phalke, the father of India Cinema.
User Review - 6/10 by Shwetha Asaw a film that is set in 1913, in India. NO its not about Independence and NO there isn't a scene where a relentless Brit is beating the crap out of a meek Indian farmer. There is NO violence. NO freedom movement speeches. NO Bhagat Singh. No Jhansi Rani. No Nehru. NO Mangal Pandey. YES, there were moments in India...n history that were worthy of making films that did NOT involve the following names. Because as under-appreciated an entity art was or is, this movie speaks of one man's contribution to Indian Cinema in the year 1913. And that's what makes Harishchandrachi Factory an unforgettably refreshing story, a delight to watch! I have seen many films about pre-1947 India, a time when my country was under the British rule. I have loathed along with the angry characters, related to their emotional outbursts and disappointment and sensed the agony of their helplessness. So far, my reaction to all epic movies have been deeply sympathizing in nature. Because all the movies EVER made on pre-1947 India are rebellious in nature- intense and vehement. For the first time, I watched something simple, soothing and pleasant. There's no agony. No Misery. Its surreal. Hats off to Paresh Mokashi for his impeccable direction. Mr. Mokashi is to be commended highly for directing a comedy set in 1913 India. Who would even think such a genre was remotely possible? The actors and the characters are inseparable and hence deliver outstanding performances. This movie is simple and strong and is also a testimony for the fact that theater veterans are the true artists of our nation.. An Amazingly colorful film, HF allows you to elevate your involvement while watching it. For all you dreamers out there, follow Phalke sahab's simple approach to life and you'll get where you want to be. Audience and cinema enthusiasts, this movie is a treat to watch and discuss. The in-betweeners, you'll know what to do with yourselves by the end of it, because this film, is for everyone! Enjoy!
