User ReviewWilliam WThe growing pains felt by adolescents are timeless and, as this hidden gem I found that was set in 1950's Tel Aviv shows, apparently universal. Thankfully this was tossed in a 50-film megapack, 'Drive-In Movie Classics'--otherwise, from the producers, director, and no-name cast involved, I would likely never have come across it. It's basically a mix of 'American Graffiti' and 'Porky's', but the script is the right mix of angst and humour, and the actors make a little go a long way with their charisma and chemistry. The 50's songs and complete lack of any sort of pretension are overwhelmingly refreshing and appreciated! I had no idea that this was in fact a sequel (another name for it is 'Lemon Popsicle 2') and part of a series. I would certainly love to track the other films down...
User ReviewMichael AThe version I saw was badly dubbed..I think I would have enjoyed it more had I seen it in it's original language with subtitles. Still it's a decent coming of age movie with a great soundtrack.
User ReviewJames HAKA Yotzim Kavua. Enjoyable teenage hijinks, it's like a Jewish American Graffiti but not as good as that film. Appealing cast. A rather feeble effort was made however to recreate the 1950's. Great musical score with many great songs from the era.
User ReviewRichard DAn episodic teen sex comedy set in 1950's Tel Aviv. Three friends essentially hang out and try to have sex with girls while a wall-to-wall soundtrack of 1950's pop songs play. The main plot thread involves the main kid Benny romancing teen princess Tammy. What's most interesting about this film is that it's an English dub of the second film in the Israeli "Lemon Popsicle" film series. "Lemon Popsicle" is a Golan/Globus production that aimed to cash in on the success of "American Graffiti" and succeeded like wildfire. An estimated 40% of the population of Israel saw the film, so it kicked off a long series and probably supplied Golan and Globus with the money they needed to buy Cannon and enter the US market. They later re-teamed with writer/director Boaz Davidson to remake "Lemon Popsicle" in the US as "The Last American Virgin". "Lemon Popsicle" has an English dub, but it's rarely seen. For some reason, the English dub of "Lemon Popsicle 2" shows up all the time on public domain collections. Is it a good film? Well ... it's not a bad one. It sustains interest while never seeming to extend beyond a somewhat lazy cash-in.
User ReviewAdam R'tis hardly conceivable, but Kaleena and I watched this together, wanting to get the most of the 50 movie pack I'd spent my Christmas money on. What a strange experience... a badly dubbed teen comedy of the 70s made in Israel, bringing with it all the staples of its American counterparts: dumb pratfalls, a chubby sidekick, betrayals and double-crosses among friends, budding romance. In the end, it's not that funny and not that engaging. But it'll pass if you really need something to do on a lazy Sunday.
