This story of four working-class kids in a small industrial town--who go their separate ways after high school in the innocence of 1961 and come together again at the end of the turbulent Sixties--is as much about the coming of age of America as it is about the changes the characters go through. The four friends of the title are thoughtful Danilo, a Yugoslavian immigrant with dreams of being a writer and a scholar; Tom, good-looking and athletic, who is bound for the army; cautious David who has mixed feelings about staying in town and joining the family mortuary business; and lovely, ditzy, exasperating Georgia, who tries to inspire all of them with her longings for a life of Bohemian adventure. It is told through the eyes of Danilo, whose story is loosely based on the writer Tesich's own life growing up in Bloomington, Indiana.

EmanuelLevy.ComEmanuel LevyArthur Penn's saga is too episodic and the acting is uneven, but film's scope is ambitious, the issues socially relevant, and it centers on a new type of Amrican heroine, one in love with all her husband's friends--call is menage a quatre.
Ozus' World Movie ReviewsDennis SchwartzEnds in an unconvincing pat way after much tragedy.
Associated PressBob ThomasTesich wisely skirts dogma to focus on the human stories, which are funny, touching and unpredictable. Penn deserves high marks for drawing remarkable performances from the unseasoned cast.
DVDTalk.comScott WeinbergSome say this is a better-than-average film that effectively captures the tumultuous sixties and the young folks who were caught up in the craziness of it all. I don't see it.
User ReviewMike MGreat movie..just trying finding it ANYWHERE....
User ReviewJames HProbably the heaviest and most compelling coming-of-age in American films I've ever seen. The scope of the film is just amazing as it shows a young man pass through more levels and segments of American society than he ever imagined existed. Show this one to your 18 to 20 year old kids.
User ReviewVJ BI don't know why I love this movie. It is shallow, badly acted in parts, covers way too much territory and time and show stereotypical representations of the time frame it is based in. Yet it all comes together wonderfully for me and I revisit it on a regular basis. This movie is the reason I searched out Ray Charles' 45 of "Georgia on my mind".
User ReviewHannah MGood memories... Isadora Duncan... Mmm...

User ReviewRahadyan SA sentimental favorite from my college years. It appealed to me as an outsider prone to dating "all-American" women. I should revisit it after 26 years.
