User ReviewGabe SMy torrid love affair with Jodie Foster: where it all began.
User ReviewRoss YOkay...first things first. Get rid of that stupid, inane, crappy cover of Jodie Foster, and put back the artwork with the algerbra teacher with the arrow in his back...and the penguin. In fact, in the film, Jodie's hair is short and is wearing something that matches the time period of the mid-1960's. Ouch...! Look at that Flixster rating...currently at 83 percent not interested. Betcha any change that that 83 percentile has zero idea what this film is about. That's a darn shame. That's sad, really it is. Not that I'm entirely surprised. This gem was directed by Tony Bill, and written by John Patrick Shanley (yeah...the dude who wrote the Oscar winning 'Moonstruck' also from the 80's) ..so, one more time, I'm here to do the community service of the day. There are two main stories with interconnecting characters : one has Heinz (John Turturro) get out of jail and return to the old neighborhood. Heinz was arrested for assulting and raping Linda (Jodie Foster) who now works in a pet store. Upon learning his release, Linda and buddy James (Todd Graff) track down Harry Fitzgerald (Tim Robbons) the only guy who stood up to Heinz without getting a serious injury. However, it's been awhile, and Harry isn't the rough kid that they once knew; it is his goal to help with the civil rights movement. The subplot involves two youths who are out of school for day due to the unexpected death of the math teacher, and go on a vandalizing spree...only to hook up with two young ladies and have some laughs riding elevators-on top of the elevators. (again, it's set in 1964) The best part of this movie isn't the acting, as great as it is, but the outstanding script from Shanley. The re-marketing as seen on the lame-o DVD cover art does this film a great disservice. Classic scenes: 1) Heinz beats a penguin to death. 2) Harry meets with the civil rights workers [one of who is played by Eric LaSalle] 3)Heinz: "How much for the pie?" Storeowner: "One Dollar" Heinz dips his finger into the cream pie. Licks the tip of his finger. Heinz: "How Much Is It Now?' Storeowner: "Now, it's nothing"
User ReviewBrett WWriter John Patrick Stanley's "Moonstruck" received all the glory in 1987, but his other film, FIVE CORNERS, deserves as much praise. Poignant, funny, witty and heartfelt, FIVE CORNERS pairs Robbins' idealistic Freedom Rider of 1964 vs. Turturro's violent psycho who longs for Foster. The DVD is hard to find and early editions are downright awful. Seek an old CHS copy, but will someone please -- please -- do this film justice and release it properly in digital form?
User ReviewShawn WA forgotten gem, "Five Corners" is nostalgic but not sappy and/or sentimental, its characters are rich and memorable. And the performances . . . where does one start? John Turturro giving a masterful performance as an unpredictable, complicated and somewhat likeable villain and then there's the bombshell Tomei, the emotionally-charged performance from Tim Robbins--and there's Jodie Foster who is the weakest link. The directing is surprising and is aided by a spotty but sensational script, lavish cinematography, set and costume design that stick in one's memory bank for a long while.
User ReviewWillem WKooky little movie with weird little connections, some great 'where'd he come from" work from a young John Tuturro. I like oddball little movies like this.
User ReviewKerstin Mquirky and unusual drama, definitely worth watching.
User ReviewGreg TIn 1960s The Bronx a maths teacher is murdered with arrows, a dangerous felon is released from prison seemingly intent on starting where he left off, and the biggest thug of the neighbourhood has renounced violence and is embracing the civil rights movement, inspired by Martin Luther King. The slice-of-life realism, combined with the broad and jarring surrealism, of FIVE CORNERS makes it an unusual, beguiling and enthralling spectacle, enmeshing its characters in a web of social dilemma and out-and-out weirdness. It's difficult to extricate a coherent message from the mesmerising sequences, though it certainly offers food for thought about the nature of violence and need for a response. Though, if you're not in the mood for thinking at least there are penguins. A strangely satisfying, defiantly unusual movie with great performances from Tim Robbins, Jodie Foster and the genuinely threatening John Tuturro. Unfairly unknown.
User ReviewPrivate UJodie Foster, Tim Robbins, John Turturro! Nuff said. If you havn't seen this, you really should. Quirky, dark, unpredictable.
User ReviewSV GThis is one of those I can't quite love it but I don't exactly hate it either kind of a movie. VERY strange lil film over 20 yrs old now - storyline has a moral and a tale to tell but the script needed lots of work - however very strong and impressive performance here (very) by John Turturro which made it worth the watch, so if you are a fan of his as I am, then this should be on your must see list. Nice job by Jodie Foster and Tim Robbins as well - but this was Tuturro's spotlight.
