Leave your thoughts about Firstborn.
Washington PostRita KempleyIt is to the credit of Mr. Apted, and to a cast including some very believable young actors, that Firstborn moves swiftly and smoothly enough to dispel much nitpicking about plot points, at least for a time.
Boston GlobeJay CarrFirstborn is the film we knew Apted had in him when we saw the care and craftsmanship in his Coal Miner's Daughter and Continental Divide. It's a find, and Collet's singular performance is its core.
Miami HeraldLaurie HornDirector Michael Apted (Coal Miner's Daughter) settles for a movie of pat moralism, a pamphleteer's parable of how drugs destroy families.
New York TimesJanet MaslinThe best things about Firstborn are the easy, natural performances of the actors.
Washington PostPaul AttanasioDirector Michael Apted ("Coal Miner's Daughter") settles for a movie of pat moralism, a pamphleteer's parable of how drugs destroy families.
Chicago ReaderDave KehrIt might have worked if Apted were as adept at creating an emotional atmosphere as he is in his portraiture of the suburban milieu, but too many unshaped scenes and redundant dialogue passages take their toll.
Chicago Sun-TimesRoger EbertThe movie creates such an urgent situation, and fills it with such interesting characters, that when everything goes wrong at the end I felt more than disappointed, I felt cheated.
User ReviewPaul KVastly underrated, thls is the late Corey Haim's first film, and is one of the best domestic dramas of the 80's, showing what often happens when a divorced mom, lonely for a man, brings a loser into her life and eventually her home, to the dismay of her two sons, who soon can see what a disaster he is. This is not a "fun" film and certainly is not aimed at those who like the blockbuster superhero type films. This is at times sad, and even depressing, but very realistic, with outstanding performances, and a chance to see Teri Garr, Peter Weller, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Robert Downey Junior before they became household names, as well as Christopher Collet in a terrific performance, as the son who ultimately has to save his family.
User ReviewZsófia WI only know this moving as "First Born". I really liked it. I can't wait until it comes out on DVD.
User ReviewTimeen *Corey Haim was one of my heartthrobs back in the 80s. It's a shame what happened to him, but I will always love his old movies and anything he does in the future. This was one from his early days and he was definetly a star in the making. I wish him luck in getting back on his feet. I watch him now a days on his tv show The Two Coreys and sometimes watching it is sad and I just keep saying to myself this is such a shame, but people pick there own paths and hopefully he will find his way back. Forever will love Corey Haim.
