User ReviewGiulia FSaw this movie at TIFF08. It was amazing. The director is one of my favourite Indian film stars. She has acted in loads of Indian movies with a social message. Her directorial debut is impressive, to say the least. I was fortunate enough to participate in a Q&A after the movie.
User ReviewSowmya Jvery powerful story showing different stories to a racial conflict. What was interesting was how well the Director dealt with questions from the audience who wanted her to tell a more political story (and possibly to have taken sides) rather than provide a more impartial look at the human cost of conflict. Well done! -
User ReviewJahanzeb TA masterpiece. This is what is called a film!
User ReviewRony Pcoming from a non muslim background..to direct a movie over the rampage in 2002, where many Muslims were killed, nandita das has tried to portray alot more ! this movie is not about one incident..it is about how man reacts, to violence..how we resolve differences...how humans are no where better off then animals..5 stories...with each one having great performances and significance..the one with the child stands out..he basically makes you journey through the whole event ! the one with deepti naval and paresh rawal..has an awespiring end...naseeruddin shah..is enigmatic..yet helpless as the romantic! sansay suri doesnt want to hide any more..why does a name matter so much to people around !! and shahana goswami...with a burnt house...a husband who has no solution i sight ..and a friend..who suddenly..cannot be trusted...all this and much more...in Firaaq..highly recommended !
User ReviewPrivate UNow, this is what indian audiences should watch instead of complaining that bollywood can't go beyond stereotypes. Really good, follows the Crash-Babel type of story-telling. It is a really powerful, haunting film. Great acting. Naseeruddin Shah, as usual, shines brilliantly. The rest of the cast are brilliant as well. I have a feeling that this will be the best hindi movie of the year.(ofcourse, it'll go unnoticed in large circles. there were only 7 people in the hall when I watched the film.) Definitely worth a watch!
User ReviewWrik SMy rating for this movie is 4 out of 5 stars. Nasir-u-Din's role is quite like what he played in "Khuda Ke Liye" so nothing is new from Nasir-U-Din because from a genius like him audience expects more. Paresh Rawal was quite sincere to his role. Sanjay Suri has given the same appearance which he has already given in so many films so once again "nothing new". Story about after-shock of Gujrat riots is too powerful and difficult, so it becomes very challenging for the director., but luckily Director "Nandita" has done a great job in her debut. I know that muslims had very difficult time in Gujrat riots but this bad, I never imagined.
User ReviewEbru Ktouchy subject... very very touchy and dramatic music... that musician and his words "Sirf saat suron mein aisi kabiliyat kahan, ki aisi nafrat ka saamna kar sakein (Where do seven notes bear the ability from, to take on such hatred?)" makes you sadden.. i feel lucky watching this movie w/ the director Nandita Das at Istanbul Film Festival this year.. she seems very intelligent and confident when it comes the q&a section after the screening.. as she said the reality is unbalanced and her film is showing that.. it is a work of fiction based on a thousand true stories.. makes you think and wonder about the everlasting conflict going on around middle east and india but not in europe or in u.s.
User ReviewPrachi PIt was outstanding! Very powerful and each story was told perfectly. I appreciated that it was a character story and each character added a different dimension to telling the whole story. Brilliant acting from each and every person. And Nandita Das is as great of a writer and director as she is an actor. I like that it was left ambiguous, any other way would not have affected us the same way.
User ReviewFaisal MAwesome work by Nandita das. really imprssed by her work. the movie had everything... great story, great acting and great direction. all the actors acted really welll and Nandita das handled this topic really well..
User ReviewPushkar KFirstly the star-cast attracted me....Nasir Sir, Deepti Naval after a really long time, Paresh Rawal, tisca Chopra and Sanjay suri. These names are known in industry for their acting rather than their celebrity value. Next thing that attracted me was Nandeeta Das as a director. As we all know she is an amazing actress but after watching firaaq i think she should change her field from acting to direction. firaaq is a movie without massage but has some delicate issues which makes us think. based on gujraat confict and its effect on some common people firaaq completely seals with the human emotions hurt after the violence rather than the hindu muslim issue. i found nandita das's work really good. if you talk about acting then nasir sir has done a excellent job and now when i compare this role with one in ishqiya, i cant find a single similarity. its feels good to see Deepti Naval on the screen after a really long time and no one could have given her a comeback as good as this than nandeeta das. overall its a must watch because our society always ignore such good quality movie though they win many prestigious awards outside the country.
